To***co Decoy Operation

On Friday, May 29, 2026, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), conducted a youth decoy operation to limit the sales of to***co/nicotine products to youth. Four clerks sold to***co products to the youth decoy, who was under the age of 21.
During the operation, the decoy was supervised by Deputies from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office as the decoy attempted to purchase to***co products from 24 to***co retail licensed businesses throughout Shasta County. The following businesses were cited for selling to***co/nicotine products to the decoy:

Drive-In Market, 13719 Hill Boulevard, City of Shasta Lake
Comet’s Gas, 12886 Lake Boulevard, Redding
Comet’s Gas, 9345 Skycrest Way, Palo Cedro
Smoke Shop Plus, 3495 Main Street, Cottonwood

The employees responsible were issued citations for 308(a)(1)(a) PC - Furnishing to***co/nicotine products to an underage minor; and educated on how to prevent further violations.
Both agencies would like to remind everyone that the minimum age of purchasing and using to***co products is 21 years old. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office will continue to conduct periodic compliance checks to reduce the availability of to***co and va**ng products to youth in Shasta County and continue to provide businesses and employees education on the dangers of selling to***co/nicotine products to youth and the negative impacts these products have on young people.
This operation was made possible thanks to funding provided by the Department of Justice – To***co Grant Program through the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency.

GONE, BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

Deputy Constable James A. Greenlee
End of Watch: May 27, 1885

On April 26, 1885, an ex-convict by the name of Gibbons, assaulted and attempted to murder an entire family near Round Mountain in Shasta County. A warrant was issued and given to Constable Greenlee for service. Gibbons was tracked to an area near Lookout in Big Valley. Just after sunrise on May 27, 1885, Gibbons fled into the nearby woods, where he was pursued by Constable Greenlee and citizens, Charles Fitzwater and John McNemar.
Finding Gibbons in the top of a broken tree, Constable Greenlee demanded his surrender. Gibbons responded with shots fired, striking Constable Greenlee just over the left eye. Despite the mortal wound, Constable Greenlee was able to return fire, striking Gibbons in the left chest near his heart. Fitzwater and McNemar took Gibbons into custody where he died a few days later.
Constable James A Greenlee was a widower at the time of his death. He was survived by his three children.

Four Northern California counties have a reason to be proud as 13 Correctional Deputies have now completed required training.

CORE Class 14 graduated this week and featured class members from Shasta, Siskiyou, Humboldt and Tehama Counties.

What is CORE? Upon employment, Correctional Deputies must complete 187 hours of training within one year of being hired. Shasta County holds these classes which allows Correctional Deputies from Shasta and neighboring counties to complete this requirement without extensive travel.

Please join us in congratulating these men and women on their accomplishments!

Major Crimes Unit Makes Arrest for Homicide

On July 20, 2021, at 1112 hours, James Redmill Jr. contacted SHASCOM to report his father, James Redmill Sr., missing from his residence on Wild Turkey Road in the Trinity Alps Preserve area of Shasta County. Redmill Sr.’s family had traveled from Washington State to Shasta County after being contacted by neighbors who had not seen him for several days. Deputy Dyche was the initial responding deputy who took the missing persons report.
A missing person report requires deputies to immediately accept and investigate the report, document when and where the person was last seen, gather identifying information, interview reporting parties and witnesses, and check relevant locations for evidence or signs of foul play. When appropriate, deputies issue a BOLO, and the missing person is entered into the required databases, including the California Department of Justice Missing and Unidentified Persons System (MUPS) and the FBI’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Follow-up steps may also include obtaining photographs, medical or dental information, DNA/biological samples from family, and continued investigative updates until the person is located.
Neighbors reported Redmill Sr. was last seen on or around July 8, 2021. They also reported suspicious activity at Redmill Sr.’s property after his disappearance, including unfamiliar vehicles on the property and items being loaded from the residence. The circumstances surrounding Redmill Sr.’s disappearance were considered suspicious, and the case was initially investigated by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit (MCU) Detective Henderson. Despite follow-up on all available leads at the time, no further actionable information was developed.
In April 2026, the case was reassigned to MCU Detective Amanda Pruitt and Detective Travis Williams. MCU received new information indicating Redmill Sr. may have been killed and buried on a neighboring property belonging to Nicholas Allen Beery, age 55, of Igo, CA.
On May 19, 2026, at 0707 hours, Major Crimes Unit Detectives, with assistance from the Shasta County Interagency SWAT Team, Shasta Interagency Narcotics Task Force (SINTF), AB109/SAFE Team, and the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, served the search warrant at Beery’s residence. During the search, investigators located a buried set of human remains behind the residence. The Chico State Anthropology Department assisted with the recovery of the remains.
The remains were positively identified as James Redmill Sr. During the search of Beery’s residence, detectives also located multiple fi****ms, including illegal assault weapons and manufacturing components, methamphetamine packaged for sale, and drug paraphernalia.

Beery was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail for 187 PC, Homicide, as well as firearm and drug-related charges. Detectives also requested special allegations for use of a firearm causing death and lying in wait. Beery is being held without bail, and his arraignment is scheduled for May 21, 2026.
This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the assisting agencies involved in this investigation, including the Shasta County Interagency SWAT Team, Shasta County Interagency Narcotics Task Force, AB109/SAFE Team, Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, Chico State Anthropology Department, Shasta County Public Works, and CAL FIRE.
