🌸 The Legend of Gypsy Lord — A Story of Beauty and Breeding
In the world of iris cultivation, some flowers transcend gardens — they become legends. Gypsy Lord is one such iris.
Born from the visionary hybridizing work of Keith Keppel in 2005, Gypsy Lord Tall Bearded Iris was meticulously crafted from a cross between Last Laugh and a select Keppel seedling — a lineage chosen for dramatic contrast and elegance. What emerged was not just another tall bearded iris, but a dramatic, commanding bloom that has captivated iris lovers across the world.
Rising to around 40 inches tall, Gypsy Lord's lofty stem carries flowers that seem to be painted by nature itself — crisp bluish-white upper petals that float above marbled blue-violet falls, centered with a deep paprika beard that draws the eye like a jewel in a crown and giving the appearance of a Red, White and Blue flower.
From its introduction in 2006, Gypsy Lord Tall Bearded Iris didn’t just bloom; it conquered the show bench. It earned early recognition with an Honorable Mention in 2008, followed by the American Iris Society’s Award of Merit in 2010, the prestigious Wister Medal in 2012, and ultimately the American D***s Medal in 2015 — the highest honor an iris can achieve. These accolades didn’t just celebrate its beauty — they marked it as a cultivar of exceptional impact.
Gardeners often say that Gypsy Lord doesn’t merely add color — it commands presence. Its striking appearance makes it a focal point in perennial borders, cut flower arrangements, and collections large and small. It’s a testament to what dedicated hybridizing can achieve.
When you plant Gypsy Lord irises, you’re not just planting flowers— you’re welcoming a story of passion, precision, and pride into your garden.
