A project of "ArtReach" in Red Wing, Minnesota. CULTURESHED (kul’cher-shed) n. 1. A geographic region irrigated by streams of local talent and fed by deep pools of human and natural history. 2. An area nourished by what is cultivated locally. 3. The efforts of writers, performers, visual artists, scholars, farmers and chefs who contribute to a vital and diverse local culture. (Term coined by Wormf
arm Institute co-founder Jay Salinas in 1998)
Starting in the fall of 2013, a committee formed and started meeting regularly to examine Red Wing's need, desire and potential for Creative Placemaking strategies. At the same time investigating opportunities to support this community effort; such as grants from NEA Our Town and ArtPlace America. The committee, which later became known as the Our Town group, involved committed members from the business sector, city government, and nonprofit sector - primarily arts and cultural organizations. The yearlong process also involved direct engagement from individual artists, community members, and other stakeholders. The culmination of this work led to the concept of The Cultureshed. The Cultureshed begins as a "creative solutions center" strategically linking community, local government, and businesses with artists, designers, fabricators, and arts/cultural organizations to improve quality of life, create a sense of place, and revitalize local economies.
[The Cultureshed may eventually grow to include a "nontraditional multidisciplinary residency program" deploying artists, scholars and conservationists to complete their residencies within local government, heritage industries, nonprofits, parks and preserves. More on this later.]
The Cultureshed , a project of ArtReach, is currently funded by a grant from Red Wing Housing & Redevelopment Authority with primary focus beginning in "Old West Main / Pottery District" Sept. 2015 to Sept. 2017 with initial consultation from Forecast for Public Art.
