Here in Goodhue County, we have all kinds of dams, from large structures like Lake Byllesby near Cannon Falls, to the many earthen dams throughout our local watersheds, and even Lock & Dam 3 along the Mississippi River.

Each dam is built differently, serves a different purpose, and comes with its own unique hazards. Some create strong currents and undertows, others can change water levels quickly, and earthen dams may not always look dangerous at first glance.

Whether you live near a dam, fish near one, kayak past one, or just enjoy spending time on the water, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the potential hazards around it.

Remember:
Water doesn’t need to be deep to be dangerous
Warning signs and buoys are there for a reason
“Restricted Area” does not mean “great fishing spot”
Currents near dams can overpower even strong swimmers and boaters

We want everyone to enjoy Minnesota’s lakes and rivers safely this summer. A little awareness today can prevent a tragedy tomorrow.

For this month's Dive Team training day, the team went out to Hok-Si-La to work on body recovery skills, to be prepared in the event of a drowning. Members of the team spent the morning going through a simulated drowning exercise, where their training mannequin was placed at the bottom of the river and through interviewing a mock witness and using sonar on the boats, the team went out and recovered the mannequin. The afternoon was also spent continuing to work on recovery skills, working through the environment of zero visibility water conditions.

For many, Memorial Day means a long weekend, time with family and friends, BBQs, and the start of summer activities. As you enjoy the weekend, please remember the true purpose of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a day to honor the men and women who lost their lives while serving our country.

While thanking a veteran is always meant as a kind gesture, many veterans view today as a time focused on remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

This Memorial Day, please take a moment to remember and honor the fallen who gave their lives in service to our country.

The Zumbrota Mazeppa Community Education Bike Rodeo was held on Monday, May 18, at the primary school. The event is designed to encourage bike safety and responsible riding. At the event, kids had their bikes inspected, drove through a course with several obstacles, and had the chance to win one of the 22 giveaway bikes plus many other prizes! A huge thank you to the Mazeppa Lions Club and Scheels for sponsoring the event.

On May 14, Sheriff Kelly had the opportunity to spend time with some amazing Cannon Falls 3rd graders building birdhouses together! 🐦🔨

It was a great time filled with teamwork, creativity, and plenty of smiles. We’re proud to support opportunities that help build positive connections with the youth in our community while teaching hands-on skills and encouraging creativity.

A big thank you to the students and their teacher, Sara Bryan (who happens to be Sheriff Kelly's daughter), who made this event so special. We can’t wait to see all the birdhouses welcoming new feathered residents this spring!

National Boating Safety Week is here!

Remember, the fish don’t care if your boat is “unsinkable.” A little planning before hitting the water can make all the difference.

Have a plan before you launch
Familiarize yourself with the area and water conditions
Keep an eye on the weather before and during your trip
Let someone know where you’re going
And most importantly, WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET. They only work if you have them on, and they can save your life when seconds matter.

Have fun, stay safe, and make sure your boating stories end with “remember that great day on the river/lake…”
