🌪️ Statewide Tornado Drill – 10:00 AM Today 🌪️

Today is a great opportunity to practice what you would do in a real emergency. At 10:00 AM, take a few minutes to participate in the statewide tornado drill and review your safety plan. All outdoor warning sirens will sound during this time.

Make sure you and your family know:
• Where to go (lowest level, interior room, away from windows)
• How to receive warnings (weather radio, apps, local alerts)
• What to bring (shoes, phone, flashlight, emergency kit)

Don’t forget—preparedness starts at home. Talk with your family today about your plan so everyone knows what to do when seconds count.

🌪️ Severe Weather Awareness Week: Day 2 - Tornado Safety 🌪️

Tornadoes can develop quickly—know what to do before warnings are issued.

✔️ Be Prepared:
• Have multiple ways to receive warnings (NOAA Weather Radio, apps, AlertIowa)
• Identify your safe place: basement, storm shelter, or an interior room on the lowest floor
• Practice your plan with your family

✔️ When a Tornado Warning is Issued:
• Take shelter immediately—don’t wait to see the tornado
• Stay away from windows and cover your head
• Mobile homes and vehicles are not safe—seek sturdy shelter

✔️ After the Storm:
• Watch for hazards like downed power lines and debris
• Check on neighbors if it’s safe to do so

Being prepared can save lives. Take a few minutes today to review your plan.

Severe Weather Awareness Week 2026 - Day 1, Lightning

⚡ Lightning can strike miles away from a storm—don’t wait until it’s overhead to take action.

When thunder roars, go indoors. Move into a sturdy building or vehicle, avoid open areas, and stay away from trees, water, and metal objects. If you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck.

Stay inside for at least 30 minutes after the last rumble. Your safety is worth the wait.
