St. Margaret's Home, Red Hook, NY St. Margaret's Home is a designated Nation Historic Landmark Circa 1853 A Short History of St. Margaret’s

The story of St. Margaret’s. Margaret’s Orphan Asylum”.

Margaret’s properly begins with its founder and benefactress, Margaret Armstrong Astor. Raised for at least part of her childhood on the banks of the Hudson River, Margaret Armstrong was the daughter of Alida Livingston, whose ancestors had acquired vast tracts of Hudson Valley land in 1688, and General John Armstrong, who built Rokeby on a piece of that land. Another piece of that Livingston land

would become the site for St. In 1818, Margaret Armstrong married the fabulously wealthy William Backhouse Astor. Aware of reform movements in large American cities and in an effort to do a “good work”, Mrs. Astor persuaded her husband in 1851 to buy a parcel of land from her brother and to establish in 1852 and 1853 the “St. Offering food and lodging to girls who either had no home or whose parents could not provide for them, St. Margaret’s also had on staff teachers who trained the girls in the “domestic arts”, such as cooking, sewing, ironing, etc. When the girls reached the age of sixteen, they were able to take positions in one of the large homes in the area or to marry. Mrs. Astor funded St. Margaret’s until her death, and her descendants continued to support it for generations. When a combination of factors forced the institution to close in the 1930’s, the building became successively a welfare home, a private residence and finally a transitional living center, until that use too was terminated in the 1990’s. Margaret’s was built in the “Tuscan Villa” or Italianate style, with large French windows and first floor ceilings that rise nearly twelve feet. The fluted columns are cast iron, and the exterior window and door trim is brownstone. The walls are fourteen and a half inches thick. The architect who designed the building has not yet been identified, although it seems likely that he was well known at the time and that he had been commissioned by the Astors or members of their extended family for previous projects. An important building both historically and architecturally, St. Margaret’s was languishing until 2006 when Martin’s Foods, the parent company of Hannaford’s Supermarket, generously donated it together with nearly two acres of land to the Town of Red Hook. Within two years, the building was listed on both the State and the National Registers of Historic Places.

Postman is Happy to Sing the Blues !
Come to St. Margaret's June 18th at 7pm and listen!

Jim Pospisil was a well-known favorite of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild in his early days as a musician. He then disappeared from the scene to take time to raise his family. Now that his children are grown Jim is ready to give up his day job as a postman, making an impressive comeback as a professional singer-songwriter.

Pospisil's work is as diverse as it is entertaining. His styles include blues and Celtic folk songs as well as traditional folk and rock. He even plays in the rock band, "Bucket of Mud," with his son. You can hear some of Jim's original works at St. Margaret's Historic Site at 7 PM on June 18th, the Saturday evening of Father's Day weekend. We invite you to bring your picnic basket and lawn chair for this great community event which is part of an ongoing series of events at historic St. Margaret's Home through the collaborative efforts of the Town of Red Hook, Red Hook Community Artists' Network (RHCAN) and the Red Hook Chamber of Commerce. The artwork currently on display feature works created by the Artists' Collective of Hyde Park, a group which often features Jim as a popular musician in their own gallery.

St. Margaret's is located between Hannaford's and Holy Cow at 7260 Albany Post Road (Route 9) in Red Hook, where art work from the Artists' Collective of Hyde Park is also on display. Handicapped permit parking is available on site at St. Margaret's. Additional Parking is available at the back of the Hardscrabble parking lot next door where Holy Cow and Hanna Sushi are located. All events at St. Margaret's are free and open to the public.

Ribbon Cutting, Opening and Reception for Tatiana Rhinevault, Fine Art Exhibit (Showing May 1st -May 31st) - Opening Thursday, May 12 4:00pm.

Tatiana Rhinevault is a Russian Impressionist who enjoys practicing classical styles in water color, oil, and other media. Her work has been known world-wide from her home in Moscow and throughout Europe, to New York City and her more recent home in Hyde Park, NY. Her exhibit at St. Margaret's Historic Site gives the public a rare glimpse at over 40 pieces of Tatiana's work displayed according to themes including "Music," "Watercolors," "New York City and Hudson Valley," as well as a room dedicated to "lighting a torch" for children who have been traumatized by war. This room fittingly memorializes the experiences of Tatiana's family during WWII in Russia. It contains their heart-wrenching family history, Tatiana's desire to raise awareness for the plight of suffering children, and a significant work never before displayed for public view. In addition to this Tatiana's cello teacher, Natalia Timofeyeva, a student of Rostropovich, wrote and recorded a musical solo to accompany this image. Natalia's music also makes its world premiere at Tatiana's exhibit.
