MCRTA met today, 3/10/26, at Wellworth Bank. The meeting opened with prayer led by Jackie Rich and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Peggy Stephens. After a delicious lunch sponsored by the bank and provided by Gibsons Cafe, MCRTA President, David Flynn, led business items with the group. Among the discussion were the upcoming scholarship, a fall day trip, Mary Tom link volunteering to work with communication for members and the creation of a new scholarship in memory of George McCrary. Following the business meeting, Jackie and Sherry Rich with BOB’s House presented the program. MCRTA wishes to thank Wellworth Bank for the lunch and gift items for members.

MCRTA enjoyed their annual Christmas brunch meeting today at C3 Coffee Shop. They have a beautiful event space and served a delicious breakfast along with homemade muffins and cheesecakes. Prior to the meal, MCRTA President, David Flynn, welcomed everyone and Pastor Ron Matthis with the First Baptist Church of Lafayette offered a blessing. Following the meal, Shawn Carter, Macon County Director of Schools, brought updates on the school system including their recent award status and the new school being built. Antionette Lee, TRTA, then brought remarks regarding opportunities for community involvement and TRTA events. MCRTA grant winners were recognized and presented what they are doing with the grant funds awarded to their projects which included sensory playground equipment at LES and science RTI materials at MCJH. Congratulations to Derek McCaleb, Kim Fitzgerald and Casey Roark on being awarded these grant opportunities!! Afterwards, members enjoyed the door prize drawings and time to socialize with fellow members and guests. MCRTA wishes to thank C3 for their amazing work with us to make today’s meeting possible! Also, MCRTA would like to thank Knollwood Manor and Linda Austin for your continued support of MCRTA and sponsorship of Christmas brunch meeting.

During our October meeting, MCRTA enjoyed a delicious meal sponsored by Macon Community Hospital. The program was presented by Dr. Koch with Tennessee Heart. Following the program, business was conducted including the next meeting which will be the Christmas brunch on Dec. 2nd.

On Thursday, September 4th, the Macon Retired Teachers met at the cabin in Winding Stairs Park. The meeting was sponsored by NCTC, who provided a delicious lunch and a gift for attendees. Carl Gregory led the group in prayer and in the Pledge of Allegiance. After lunch, David Flynn, MCRTA president, opened the meeting and Johnny McClanahan, CEO of NCTC, brought welcome remarks on behalf of NCTC. The September meeting always features memorials of local educators that have passed away over the year. This year Mary Donoho, David Woods and Margaret Cook were highlighted with the reading of their career and family members, as well as, fond memories shared by the group attending. Next, Dr. Johnequia Patterson, medical director at Primary Healthcare, spoke about the various tests and vaccines we should have. The information was very informative. Following the program, a brief business meeting was held. Much thanks to NCTC for their kindness and generosity sponsoring today’s meeting.

On Tuesday, June 3rd, MCRTA held its summer meeting at the cabin in Winding Stairs Park. The meeting was sponsored by Macon Bank & Trust Company who provided a delicious lunch catered by Linda Morris as well gifts for attendees. Barry Waldrond led the group in prayer before lunch. After lunch, the Pledge of Alligience was led by Carl Gregory. David Flynn, MCRTA President, opened the meeting and Johnathon West brought welcome remarks on behalf of Macon Bank. Shawn Carter, Macon County Director of Schools, provided the program and discussed the 2024-25 school year as well as the upcoming 25-26 year ahead. Following the program, a brief business meeting was held. Macon Bank also held a drawing for the fresh flower arrangement which was won by member Faye Fizpatrick. Faye had to have a little coxing to have her picture made lol but afterwards donated the flowers to a member currently in the hospital. Much gratitude to Macon Bank for their kindness and generosity sponsoring today’s meeting.

The Macon County Retired Teachers is offering a trip on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, to Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, TN to see “9 to 5.” Lunch is included at a Crossville restaurant. Cost is $128.00 per person. Pickups will be in Westmoreland, Lafayette, Hartsville and Carthage. This is a convenient way to enjoy a day out; you do not have to be a retired teacher to participate as everyone is welcome. The trip is filling up quickly so don’t delay—REGISTER NOW! We were honored to recognize two outstanding students tonight at the MCHS Senior Awards Night. Both recipients of the 2025 Marion West Cassady Award will graduate soon and plan to to earn their bachelor’s degree in eduction and enter the teaching profession. We wish Casen Austin and Harley Ritter much success on their endeavors!!

MCRTA met today, March 6, 2025 for their annual spring meeting. The meeting was sponsored and hosted by Citizens Bank who also provided a delicious lunch from
Gibsons Cafe and goodie bags for all attending. The program was conducted by the Physical Therapy Department from Macon Community Hospital with Sonja Gregory and Emily Gregory presenting flexibility stretching exercises for seniors. President, David Flynn, opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Rita Wilburn and prayer led by Phillip Stafford. Linda McCrary and Wynona Clayborne discussed the latest education legislative topics followed the minutes and treasury reports. Also, the MCRTA voted in their 2025-26 officers with the re-election of the current officer slate of David Flynn-President, George McCrary-Vice-President, Faye Fitzpatrick-Treasurer and Gail Smith-Secretary.
Also discussed was the upcoming MCRTA sponsored bus trip to see “Singing in the Rain” on April 10th. There are still 10-12 spots available for anyone to attend that would like to travel to see the musical. For more info on the trip, you can message David Flynn here on Facebook.
The MCRTA expresses their sincere gratitude for the hospitality of host Citizens Bank and the program from Macon Community Hospital.
The next meeting of MCRTA will be held on June 3, 2025.
