๐Ÿšฒโšก KNOW THE RULES. RIDE SAFE. STAY LEGAL. ๐Ÿ๏ธ

The Reading Police Department is seeing more and more electric bikes, mopeds, motorized bicycles, and electric motorcycles on our roadways. As these vehicles continue to grow in popularity, so do our concerns about the safety of riders, pedestrians, and motorists.

Many of these vehicles can travel at significant speeds, and they are not all treated the same under Massachusetts law. Depending on what you are riding, different requirements may apply regarding age, licensing, registration, helmets, speed, and where the vehicle can legally be operated.

We are asking riders โ€” and especially parents of younger riders โ€” to take the time to understand what type of vehicle they or their children are operating and the laws that apply. Something that looks like an electric bicycle may actually fall into a different legal category with very different requirements.

Our goal is to prevent a serious injury or tragedy before one occurs. Please review the attached guide, talk with the young riders in your household, and help us keep Reading's roads and sidewalks safe.

๐Ÿ“ฃ MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

The Reading Police Department supports efforts to provide clearer and more consistent statewide regulations for these increasingly popular vehicles. Residents who share these safety concerns are encouraged to learn more about the proposed Ride Safe Act and contact their state legislators to express their support for legislation that provides clearer rules and greater protections for riders, pedestrians, and motorists.

๐ŸŽ’๐Ÿ“š BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER! ๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿšธ

The first day of school is right around the corner! As our students head back to the classroom, weโ€™re asking everyone in our community to slow down, stay alert, and make safety a priority.

๐ŸšŒ STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES
When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, STOP and give our children plenty of space to safely get on and off the bus.

๐Ÿšธ WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS
Always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and be especially alert for children walking or biking to school. Remember, kids may not always be paying attention to traffic.

๐Ÿ›‘ OBEY STOP SIGNS & TRAFFIC SIGNALS
Come to a complete stop and make sure the roadway is clear before proceeding.

๐Ÿš— SLOW DOWN & OBEY THE SPEED LIMIT
Give yourself extra time during the morning and afternoon commute. School zones and residential streets can be busy with children, buses, and increased pedestrian traffic.

โค๏ธ A few extra seconds of patience could make all the difference.

Letโ€™s work together to make this school year a safe, happy, and successful one for all of our students!

Drive with care. Their future is in your hands.

๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽ’ Welcome back, students! Have a safe school year!

๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿšฒ Lemonade & Helmet Citations! ๐Ÿš“๐Ÿช–

Today, Officer Balbo stopped by to grab a refreshing lemonade and support some of our young entrepreneurs!

๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿ’› While she was there, she also had the opportunity to reward these smart, hardworking kids with Helmet Citations for making safe choices while riding their bikes. ๐Ÿ‘

As summer comes to an end, our officers are still out rewarding kids who are wearing their helmets while riding bikes, scooters, and skateboards! ๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿ›ด๐Ÿ›น

We still have plenty of Helmet Citations left, and we hope to hand out as many as possible before school starts! ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽ’

Keep up the great work, stay safe, and keep wearing those helmets! ๐Ÿช–๐Ÿ‘

Enjoy the rest of your summer! โ˜€๏ธ
