In the early days, many volunteer firefighters learned the job on the fly—gaining experience during calls and from seasoned members of the department. In the 1960s, programs like the TNI training sessions shown in this photo helped change that by introducing more structured instruction and core firefighting skills before facing real emergencies.
These trainings focused on essential skills like hose handling, ladder work, and pump operations, helping volunteers become more effective—and safer—on the fireground.
This photo captures one of those early sessions. In the foreground are Eldridge Thomas, Virgil Poling, and Chief Don Stout, who served as the instructor. Behind them stand the firefighters who made up the first officially trained group of firefighters in the district.
We’re grateful to these early volunteers whose dedication helped build the foundation of the Northwestern Fire District we know today.
