The Portage County 2050 Comprehensive Plan was adopted on May 18, 2023 by the Board of County Commissioners. Following this adoption, the Comprehensive Plan will go through an annual assessment to determine which strategies and objectives have been accomplished and if priorities have shifted. The Haven of Portage County construction began last week July 14, 2021. The estimated finish date for this project is August 22, 2021. Updates to come!

The Portage County Regional Planning Commission has applied for a Community Development Allocation Grant to aid the Haven of Portage County with a Water & Sewer Improvements Project.

Funds will be used to construct a waterline and tie in fees for water, sanitation, and sewer for a building located at 2645 State Route 59 in Ravenna Township that will be used as a shelter to the homeless and Low-Moderate Income persons in Portage County.

Grant Funds Awarded: $225,200
Haven of Portage County Contribution: $17,621.75
Revolving Loan Fund: $24,763

FEMA SAFER Grant - Windham Township
The goal of SAFER is to enhance the local fire departments' abilities to comply with staffing, response, and operational standards established by the NFPA
Amount Requested: $120,960

FEMA SAFER Grant - Palmyra Township
The goal of SAFER is to enhance the local fire departments' abilities to comply with staffing, response, and operational standards established by the NFPA
Amount Requested: $1.5 million

Recreational Trails - UH, Shalersville, and Rootstown
The goal of this grant is to improve outdoor recreational opportunities for Ohioans by funding trails for outdoor pursuits of all kinds. This is a reimbursement program that provides up to 75% project funding.
Amount Requested - UH: $63,658.42
Amount Requested - Shalersville: $134,797
Amount Requested - Rootstown: $100,227

NatureWorks - Shalersville Township
The NatureWorks grant program provides up to 75% reimbursement assistance for local government subdivisions for the acquisition, development, and rehabilitation of recreational areas.

Update: Portage County Subdivision Regulations

We are in the process of merging subdivision regulations to work with surrounding communities. There was a Public Hearing with the Board of County Commissioners on 5/9/21 and an information gathering with the PCRPC on 5/12/21.

The Board of County Commissioners met on 6/1/21 to provide recommendations to the PCRPC Board for approval of the proposal. All proposed changes are available on our website, as well as the County Commissioner's website.
