The Caw Caw Interpretive Center was thrilled to host the SC7 Expedition this morning on day 22 of their 30-day journey along South Carolina’s 350-mile Palmetto Trail, spotlighting the state’s natural wonders and the efforts to protect them.

Today’s hike was led by South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Director Dr. Tom Mullikin.

Part of the day’s activities also included a one mile multisensory hike for the visually impaired led by Charleston County Parks’ naturalist Kristina Wheeler and SCDNR State Botanist Keith Bradley.

We recently hosted a Caw Caw Interpretive Center Amateur Photo Contest and the results are in!

On a recent early morning bird walk at the Caw Caw Interpretive Center, participants were treated to the incredible sight of our resident nesting Bald Eagle pair in action.

Naturalist Kristina Wheeler captured this photo just after the eagle heard a piercing call from its mate, presumably to switch out for incubation duties. The eagle in the photo is a male, identifiable because of the metal leg band on the left leg. When the nesting pair are seen together, the smaller size of the banded eagle tells us that it is a male.

If you ever find a bird with a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service or U.S. Geological Survey leg band, you can help support vital research! Report bands by calling 1-800-327-2263 or by submitting the information online. Every report helps scientists learn about migration, behavior, survival, reproduction, and population trends.
