Today, as we mark 25 years since September 11, 2001, the Colfax County Sheriff’s Office pauses alongside our community and nation to remember.

We pause to honor the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost, pay tribute to the incredible bravery of the first responders who rushed toward danger without hesitation, and stand in solidarity with the families who carry their memory forward every single day.

Their courage, sacrifice, and resilience define the very best of who we are. As law enforcement officers, we remain steadfast in our pledge to serve, protect, and honor that sacred trust every day.

Rayado Mesa Fire Update - 8/7/26

Over the past week, response crews have been putting in good work to extinguish the Rayado Mesa Fire, which is currently burning on the mesa, southwest of Miami.

The fire is currently 934 acres and 82% contained. This incident acreage also includes the nearby Birthday Fire, which started July 26, and combined with the existing Rayado Mesa Fire on July 27.

Due to hot temperatures and pockets of active fire behavior, flames and smoke will be visible near the fire area.

COMMUNITY NOTICE
The New Mexico Department of Health is warning people that there have been cases where fentanyl was sold by mistake as co***ne or methamphetamine. People should use fentanyl test strips when using stimulants.
Other substances, such as xylazine and medetomidine, have also been found in fentanyl. Naloxone may not stop the effects of these other substances, but it should still be given because it can reverse the effects of fentanyl and help restore breathing. The Illicit fentanyl supply can be very different from one batch to another. Some batches may be much stronger than others, and you cannot tell how strong fentanyl is just by looking at it. This can increase the risk of overdose.
To lower the risk of harm, people should carry naloxone, use small amounts, avoid mixing drugs, test substances, and have a trusted person nearby.
