Many years after the Sioux came out of the great cave into the upper world a wonderful experience took place. A beautiful woman Goddess, Whope, visited the Sioux people to tell them how Wakan Tanka, leader of the Buffalo People,

was pleased for the Sioux were a good people. She stayed with them for four days and taught them that the Sky, Earth, and Four Winds gave them everything they needed. She taught the headman, Buffalo Who Walks Standing Upright, about the Calf Pipe. She instructed him that the pipe was to be used in ceremonies to show thanks to Wakan Tanka for all their blessings. She taught Buffalo Who Walks Standing Upright how to light the pipe and point it to the Sky, Earth, and Four Winds as he smoked it. The pipe became a symbol of communion and peace to the Sioux and its legend and ceremonial practices have been carried down through the generations by the descendents of Buffalo Who Walks Standing Upright.
