How easy is it to become homeless in Rapid City?
I think we need to have an honest conversation about this.
Because homelessness doesn’t always start with bad choices.
Sometimes it starts with one unexpected medical bill. One vehicle breaking down. One lost job. One divorce. One family emergency.
And suddenly you’re trying to make $1,600–$1,800 rent work while also paying utilities, groceries, insurance, gas, a car payment and everything else.
Rapid City’s housing costs have changed dramatically, and for many people, housing is becoming simply unattainable.
And here’s what we don’t talk about enough:
You don’t have to be lazy.
You don’t have to be an addict.
You don’t have to be irresponsible.
You don’t have to stop working.
You can be working hard and still be one crisis away from losing your housing.
So maybe the question isn’t just:
“Why are people homeless?”
Maybe it’s:
“How many of us are closer to homelessness than we think?”
