Adult Literacy Matters. Our Community Needs You!
Did you know that many adults right here in West Virginia face real challenges with reading and writing? It’s nothing to be ashamed of! Literacy is a skill we all build at different ages and stages of life, and when someone struggles with reading it affects every area of life: work, health, family, and community.
Important facts:
• In West Virginia, about 1 in 5 adults reads below a 3rd-grade level, and more than 40% read below an 8th-grade level. That means everyday things like forms, instructions, job materials, or health info can be unnecessarily hard for many adults.
• Across the United States, roughly half of adults read below a 6th-grade level, and millions struggle with routine reading tasks.
These aren’t “failures”. These are people with untapped potential. Many adults work hard every day, carry responsibilities, and want to learn- they just need someone patient and supportive to walk with them.
This is where YOU matter.
Learners: If reading feels hard or you’ve put it off for years, you are welcome here. You are not alone! It’s never too late to grow your skills.
Volunteers: Adult literacy programs only work when caring community members step up to help. Even a few hours a week of tutoring or support can make a huge difference in someone’s life! Helping them navigate job opportunities, health information, and daily life with confidence.
Why volunteers are so important:
✔ Most adults learn best one-on-one or in small, supportive groups.
✔ Volunteers bring patience, encouragement, and heart- things literacy data can’t measure, but people feel every day.
✔ Every hour you give helps break the cycle and lifts up individuals, families, and our entire community.
We’re stronger together.
If you’ve ever loved reading, you can give that gift to someone who needs it. If you’ve struggled yourself, sharing that journey can be a powerful encouragement to others.
