Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle (LVEP) has been serving adults in Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan Counties of West Virginia since 1982. LVEP provides tutoring services for Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults living in the Eastern Panhandle. These services are provided free of charge by dedicated volunteer tutors trained in accordance with the standards set

This number might surprise you…

About 54% of adults in the U.S. read below a 6th-grade level.
(Source: National Center for Education Statistics)

That number reflects access, opportunity, and support.

Many adults are working, raising families, and doing their best every day, they just didn’t always get the help they needed to build these skills earlier in life.

But! It’s never too late to learn.
With the right support, adults gain confidence, independence, and new opportunities every day.

Volunteers help make that possible.
You can be part of that change:

- Encourage someone
- Volunteer your time

Sometimes, the first step starts with simply knowing help is there.

Signs Someone Might Need Literacy Support

Many adults who could benefit from reading support are incredibly resourceful. They’ve found ways to navigate daily life without drawing attention to their challenges.

Some signs someone might be struggling with reading:

• Avoids filling out forms or asks others to do it
• Says “I forgot my glasses” when asked to read something
• Prefers verbal instructions over written ones
• Has trouble with written directions or paperwork
• Relies heavily on memory instead of written information

This isn’t about ability so much as it’s about opportunity and support.
Many adults simply didn’t have access to the help they needed earlier in life. And many are still waiting for a safe, welcoming place to start.

That’s where we come in.
Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle offers free, respectful, and judgment-free support for adults who want to build their reading and writing skills.

You can help!!
✔ Talk openly about literacy
✔ Encourage someone who might be ready to learn
✔ Volunteer your time

Sometimes, the first step starts with someone simply knowing help exists.

Out of the Ashes:

In July 2023, our main office in Ranson was destroyed by a lightning strike and fire- along with years of teaching materials, equipment, and furniture that supported adult learners across our region.

It was a heartbreaking loss. But it was not the end of our story.

Thanks to a generous grant from Women Investing in Shepherd (WISH), we have completed a two-year effort to rebuild and replace what was lost. Today, we are proud to continue our mission from our new location at the Ranson Institute of Secondary Education (RISE), alongside our partners at Jefferson County Adult Education and the Eastern Panhandle Instructional Cooperative.

For more than 40 years, our volunteers have served adults throughout the Eastern Panhandle by helping build literacy, language skills, and confidence. Because of the support of our community and WISH, that legacy continues.

We are here.
We are rebuilding.
And we are ready to serve.

If you believe in second chances, lifelong learning, and strong communities, we invite you to be part of this next chapter and to share in our mission.

Together, we continue the work.

MYTH vs FACT: Adult Literacy Volunteers 💙

MYTH: “You have to be a teacher to volunteer.”
FACT: You don’t! Literacy programs provide training and support. What matters most is patience, encouragement, and consistency.

MYTH: “Tutoring takes a huge time commitment.”
FACT: Even a few hours a week can make a meaningful difference for an adult learner.

MYTH: “I wouldn’t know how to help.”
FACT: Volunteers guide, listen, and encourage! You’re not expected to have all the answers.

Volunteers help create a safe, welcoming space where adults from all walks of life can build confidence and skills at their own pace.
If you’ve ever thought about giving back, this is a simple way to make a lasting impact in our community.

You might not need literacy help, but someone you care about might.

Most adults who could benefit from reading support don’t always ask for it. Sometimes they don’t know where to start. Sometimes they just don’t know a safe, welcoming place exists.

Here’s something many people don’t realize:
According to the U.S. Department of Education’s most recent national data, 28% of U.S. adults perform at the lowest literacy level. Which means reading everyday materials can be challenging.
(Source: NCES PIAAC 2023)

This ISN'T about intelligence or effort. People learn at different times and for different reasons. Many adults simply didn’t get the support or opportunities they needed earlier in life.

That’s why adult literacy programs exist.
At Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle, we offer a safe, respectful, and welcoming place for adults to build skills at their own pace. With support, encouragement, and zero judgment.

You can help even if YOU don’t need literacy support:
1. Share this post
2. Tell someone about our program
3. Let people know it’s okay to ask for help
4. Encourage a friend or family member who’s ready to learn

Sometimes a simple conversation changes everything.

One hour of your time could change someone’s life. 💙

Adult literacy programs run on one powerful thing: volunteers.
You don’t need to be a teacher! Just someone who cares, listens, and encourages others as they build reading and writing skills.

Even a small amount of time can help someone gain confidence and open new opportunities.

Snow day reading looks different for everyone!❄️
For some, it’s a novel and hot cocoa.
For others, it’s finally learning the words that were out of reach for them before.
Adult literacy support makes those moments possible, and volunteers make it happen! 💙

Adult Literacy Matters. Our Community Needs You!

Did you know that many adults right here in West Virginia face real challenges with reading and writing? It’s nothing to be ashamed of! Literacy is a skill we all build at different ages and stages of life, and when someone struggles with reading it affects every area of life: work, health, family, and community.

Important facts:
• In West Virginia, about 1 in 5 adults reads below a 3rd-grade level, and more than 40% read below an 8th-grade level. That means everyday things like forms, instructions, job materials, or health info can be unnecessarily hard for many adults.
• Across the United States, roughly half of adults read below a 6th-grade level, and millions struggle with routine reading tasks.

These aren’t “failures”. These are people with untapped potential. Many adults work hard every day, carry responsibilities, and want to learn- they just need someone patient and supportive to walk with them.

This is where YOU matter.

Learners: If reading feels hard or you’ve put it off for years, you are welcome here. You are not alone! It’s never too late to grow your skills.

Volunteers: Adult literacy programs only work when caring community members step up to help. Even a few hours a week of tutoring or support can make a huge difference in someone’s life! Helping them navigate job opportunities, health information, and daily life with confidence.

Why volunteers are so important:
✔ Most adults learn best one-on-one or in small, supportive groups.
✔ Volunteers bring patience, encouragement, and heart- things literacy data can’t measure, but people feel every day.
✔ Every hour you give helps break the cycle and lifts up individuals, families, and our entire community.

We’re stronger together.

If you’ve ever loved reading, you can give that gift to someone who needs it. If you’ve struggled yourself, sharing that journey can be a powerful encouragement to others.
