Preserve Bubbles the Whale

Preserve Bubbles the Whale Our goal

To preserve Southern California's unique history as a source of inspiration and education for the community.

Preserve Our Whale (POW!) is a grassroots effort to incorporate Marineland’s Bubbles the Whale sculpture into the Welcome monument at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. Restoration of Bubbles acts as a tangible link to the past for current and future generations. Protecting and preserving Bubbles should be viewed as a symbol of our need to protect and preserve whales throughout the world. The

amenity design will position Bubbles in a natural, horizontal breeching position; and we are in solidarity with those who reject the notion of whales for entertainment or performance. Budget

The costs break down in three phases.

1. Protection, repair and restoration of Bubbles statue
2. Design, engineering, and construction of the amenity at the PVIC
3. Ongoing maintenance, landscaping

Our goal will be met by a combination of sources. In addition to your generous support, we are seeking foundation grants, and have received letters of support from the Wyland Foundation, Los Angeles Conservancy, and California Preservation Foundation. As this was unanimously approved by the City Council August 3rd, we will be working with Council and Staff on making this project a reality.

Happy 2022, Friends of Bubbles the Whale!

If there is one thing I'm learning, it's patience and perseverance that wins the race.

An Update: The City of RPV is currently in discussions with the selected design team, reviewing and refining scope of the proposal and contract negotiations. Next step is providing an update to the RPV City Council for review and approval to move forward.

On February 2, Michael Hixon of The Daily Breeze reported: "Rancho Palos Verdes’ official 50th birthday is not until September 2023 — but the city is already gearing up for a yearlong celebration. City Staff report said, “If the refurbishment of Bubbles is completed in time, it would be incorporated into the 50th anniversary decorations.”

The refurbished Bubbles will eventually be hoisted onto a new marque sign at the Palos Verdes Interpretive Center, according to the staff report. If Bubbles is ready in time, that could happen during next year’s “Whale of a Day” event, which takes place annually in April to celebrate the migration of the gray whale.

Please pass on the news, keep the momentum going - we're going to win the race!

Happy Holidays From Preserve Our Whale!

Thanks to everyone for supporting the restoration of Bubbles to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. In a few short months we have made significant progress toward seeing our project come to life. Thanks to the City of Rancho Palos Verdes for taking the lead soliciting proposal responses, resulting in interviews, refined scope and schedule, and fee negotiations with design firm to be announced after the holidays.

It’s great news for those who want to preserve our very unique piece of Palos Verdes history, and wouldn’t be possible without your support.

Wishing you all the best in 2022!

Stuck for gift ideas? Mr. B For Music at the Peninsula Center has the latest Beatles LP for a buck and change. Marvin “Mr. B” Bresalu stocks television sets, hi-fi’s, musical instruments, and vinyl records – along with listening booths to kick the musical tires before you buy.

Alas, Mr. B For Music is no more, but there’s still time to save Bubbles! https://www.gofundme.com/f/preserve-bubbles-the-whale

Remember when the bank teller would write in your passbook? My first savings account was with Crocker Bank, drawn to their tear-inducing commercial, “We’ve Only Just Begun”. Paul Williams wrote the song in an afternoon, and Karen Carpenter’s version topped the charts at No. 2 in November 1970.

Giving Tuesday might be a good time to remember Bubbles – we’ve only just begun!

Bubbles Update: This week saw significant progress on our project. On Thursday, representatives from the City of RPV and members of Preserve Our Whale (POW!) reviewed four proposal responses for the PVIC Welcome amenity, paving the way for interviews and contract negotiations. We’re well on our way to seeing Bubbles restored and placed in her new home, thanks to you, and the City of RPV. Your support is key to making this happen, please help us continue to raise awareness and funding for preservation and placement at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center.

Thank you Palos Verdes Pulse for your support to Preserve Our Whale! Let's restore Bubbles to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, dedicated to the education and protection of these magnificent mammals for future generations.

Here’s a little quiz for you. What do the British rock ‘n roll duo Chad and Jeremy, Beverly Hillbillies, and stranded millionaire Mr. Howell from Gilligan’s Islands have in common? They all performed at CBS-TV’s “Marineland Carnival” in 1966.

Jack Rogers Jump ‘N Jack Motor Hotel in Torrance. With a Polynesian-style swimming pool, beauty shop and TV lounge, in 1970 it was bought by Frank Del Conte, who changed the name to. . .you guessed it, Del Conte’s.

By either name, it’s gone now. . .but there’s still time to save Bubbles!
