The Rancho Cordova Police Department is working to make the City of Rancho Cordova a safe place to live and work by forming partnerships with its citizens and businesses. To us, providing Police services is a lot more than just writing a crime report after a crime has occurred; it means working with the community to prevent crime and to solve community problems. Congratulations to RCPD Officers Cassidy Knowles and Hector Aguilar on their well earned promotion to FIeld Training Officer (FTO)!

Field Training Officers are the foundation of our first line of police responders. They are responsible for training new officers in the policies and procedures of field operations, report writing, and department & community expectations. As new officers are assigned to RCPD, they are assigned to an FTO for their training process. There are several training phases the new officers must successfully complete, each one lasting at least four weeks and with a new FTO on a different shift. Upon successful completion of their final phase, officers are given the opportunity to act as the lead officer in a 2-man unit, working solely on their own and with no input or instruction from their FTO partner, unless a dire circumstance presents itself.

FTO’s also act as lead officers on their shifts and/or may take up the role as Officer In Charge (OIC) when a supervisor is unavailable.

Being promoted to FTO is a distinct milestone in the career of any officer and is something to be proud of. Congratulations to our newest FTO’s and their commitment to the community they serve!

RCPD wants to remind everyone to exercise safety and road awareness when travelling on public roadways. Case in point, RCPD recently responded to a report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident at a large intersection within city limits. Upon arriving on the scene, RCPD units blocked the lanes from approaching traffic to provide a safe area for first responders to provide aid to the involved parties. RCPD patrol units turned on all their overhead emergency lights and directional arrows to safely signal approaching traffic into adjacent lanes.

While providing first aid to one of the people involved in the earlier accident, an errant driver did not heed the emergency lights and lane closure, and collided with the rear of both patrol vehicles, causing moderate damage to both RCPD units. Thankfully no injuries were sustained by the original parties, RCPD officers, or the inattentive driver.

Please remain vigilant when driving and pay attention to the road and ensure your focus is on the roadway and other drivers, and not on distractions that may pose a safety risk to others!

Recently, Sergeant Day and Detective Firman of the RCPD Traffic Unit attended the Railroad Investigation and Safety Course for Law Enforcement. This course is presented by Operation Lifesaver and is designed to instruct Law Enforcement Officers on Safety, Enforcement, and Collisions involving railroad vehicles.

Rancho Cordova has several rail lines for public transit and commerce running through its city limits, and unfortunately accidents involving trains do happen from time to time. Through proper education and safety measures in collaboration with our law enforcement partners, RCPD continues to improve upon our “commitment to community”!

Recently, Chief Hampton and the Rancho Cordova Police Department POP team were present for Naturwood Furniture’s Waterwheel ribbon cutting ceremony. The iconic waterwheel was heavily damaged several months ago due an DUI driver striking it, and a new waterwheel was installed to retain the traditional look of one of our long standing Rancho Cordova businesses!

Recently, RCPD conducted a retail theft enforcement operation focused on retail establishments on Zinfandel Drive. The operation included members of the RCPD POP Team, RCPD detectives, and a Sacramento County Property Crimes detective.

During the operation, officers detained nine individuals and issued nine trespass notices. Officers issued three misdemeanor citations and recovered numerous items of suspected stolen merchandise. No other businesses within the shopping complex requested police assistance or made calls for service during the operation timeframe.

The operation successfully identified and addressed retail theft at the participating businesses, resulting in several enforcement actions, the recovery of stolen merchandise, and the issuance of trespass notices to individuals identified during the operation.

RCPD School Resource Officer Dela Pena believes that building strong relationships with our youth begins with taking the time to listen, connect, and be present. During a recent lunch at Cordova High School, Officer Dela Pena spent time getting to know CHS students offering encouragement, mentorship, advice, and a friendly face they could trust. He took the time to talk with students about what it means to be a SRO and a law enforcemtn officer, answering questions and giving them an opportunity to see the person behind the badge. More importantly, he wanted students to know that they could feel comfortable approaching him whenever they needed help, guidance, or simply someone willing to listen. And sometimes, building trust doesn’t happen through a formal conversation, it happens over a game of table tennis!

Officer Dela Pena joined CHS students during lunch, picked up a paddle, and shared some laughs and friendly competition. Those simple moments helped break down barriers and create meaningful connections between students and law enforcement.

For Officer Dela Pena, it’s about much more than wearing a badge. It’s about being a mentor, a role model, and a trusted resource for our kids.

These interactions provide RCPD SRO's with the opportunity to remind our students that they have people in their community who care about them and want to see them succeed in life!

Before the summer season winds down, RCPD wants everyone to kick off their end of summer festivities with safety at the forefront! Make the decision that saves lives and choose safety every time you get behind the wheel and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs!

To help keep our community safe, RCPD will have additional officers on patrol Aug. 19 through Labor Day (Sept. 1) looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The additional efforts to prevent impaired driving are part of a national enforcement campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

“Enjoying the last days of summer should be all about fun and that starts with making safe choices before making plans,” Sgt. Jeremy Day of the RCPD Traffic Unit said “Everyone deserves to get home safely, and it starts with your everyday actions.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,904 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in the U.S. in 2024 — that’s one person every 44 minutes.

🚗 Plan Ahead: If you know you’ll be drinking, arrange for a designated sober driver, call a ride-sharing service, taxi or use public transportation.
🚙 Buckle Up: Wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself in the event of a crash.
🚗 Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as texting or eating while driving. Keep your focus on the road.
🚙 Follow Speed Limits: Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.
🚗 Watch for Pedestrians and Bicyclists: With more people enjoying outdoor activities, be extra vigilant and look out for people biking and walking.
🚙 Take Breaks: If you’re traveling long distances, take regular breaks to rest and avoid fatigue.

Remember, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and cannabis products may also impair driving capabilities. If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a driving warning label, let someone who is sober drive. If you see someone who appears to be driving while impaired, call 9-1-1, and help us keep Rancho Cordova safe!

When temperatures soared recently, a quick ice cream break was just what was needed! ☀️🍨 RCPD swing shift deputies were treated to a well-deserved scoop of ice cream on one of the hottest days of the year so far. The refreshing treat was purchased by swing shift Sergeant Le, who wanted to show his appreciation for the team working hard to keep our community safe, even when the summer heat is turned all the way up!

A cold scoop, a little laughter, and some much-needed relief from the heat made for a cool moment during the shift! Thank you, Sergeant Le, for looking out for the team—and thank you to our swing shift deputies for everything you do for Rancho Cordova! 🙏

Recently, RCPD units were dispatched to a report of a hit and run vehicle accident. The caller indicated a black truck had collided with multiple vehicles, resulting in injury to one motorist, and then fled the scene. The truck was followed by a witness and upon the arrival of RCPD units at the location, the driver attempted to get back into his truck and leave, but was immediately detained pending further investigation.

Upon investigating the hit and run accidents, RCPD determined the driver, a resident of north Sacramento, had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, and upon searching his truck, a fully loaded, “Draco” mini AK-47 firearm was located under the driver's seat. The firearm was seized as evidence, and the driver was arrested for the felony vehicle code violations and fi****ms violations, and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
