Remembering September 11th — 25 Years Later

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation changed in a single morning. At 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., and in a field near Shanksville, PA, we lost 2,977 Americans — office workers, firefighters, flight crews, police officers, and passengers who never made it home to their families.

But that day also showed the world who we are. Firefighters ran up the stairs while everyone else ran down. Strangers carried strangers to safety. The passengers of Flight 93 chose to fight back rather than let their plane become one more weapon, and may well have saved the U.S. Capitol. In the years since, thousands of Americans answered the call to serve because of what happened that day — many of them our own Legion family.

To the members of American Legion Post 332: thank you for your service, then and now. Today we remember the 2,977 lives lost, we honor the first responders and veterans who carried the weight of what came after, and we stand together the way this country did in the days following 9/11 — as neighbors, as veterans, as Americans.
