State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor was honored to recognize retired Fire Chief Jed Wilson and retired Chief Joseph Brown of the Flat Branch Volunteer Fire Department with the OSFM Lifetime Achievement Award.

Chief Wilson dedicated 50 years of service to the fire service, demonstrating unwavering professionalism, leadership, and commitment to his community. As one of North Carolina’s longest-serving fire chiefs, he led with integrity, fostered teamwork, and continued serving the department as a board member after his tenure as chief.

Chief Brown’s 45 years of distinguished service reflect a lifetime of dedication to protecting others. Through his leadership, the department experienced significant growth and modernization while maintaining a culture of accountability, teamwork, and excellence.

Chief Taylor presented both awards in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to the fire service and the lasting impact they have made on the Flat Branch Volunteer Fire Department and the citizens they served.

Together, these two leaders represent 95 years of service, sacrifice, and commitment to North Carolina’s fire service. We thank them for their dedication and congratulate them on this well-deserved recognition.

OSFM Foam Analysts Steve Allred, Todd Eury, and Chris Davis presented Dr. Jeff Warren with a custom fire helmet and shield as a token of appreciation for his leadership and the Collaboratory's continued commitment to firefighter health, safety, and research. Join NC State University at the NC Emergency Training Center (ETC) at Stanly County Airport for hands-on fluorine-free foam training on June 30, 2026

Participants will learn:
✅ Differences and similarities between legacy and fluorine-free firefighting foams
✅ Storage, use, and legal considerations
✅ Fire pump panel operations
✅ Manual firefighting techniques using various nozzle streams
✅ Practical demonstrations with commercially available foam products

Personal PPE, including SCBA, is required.

We are proud to present the Valor Award to Nathan Byrd of Angier last night at the Angier & Black River Fire Department for his remarkable bravery and selfless actions during a house fire on April 6, 2026.

When a stove fire broke out in a residence, Nathan didn't wait for someone else to act. After learning the home was on fire, he jumped a six-foot fence, entered the smoke-filled house, and successfully extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived. His quick thinking and courageous response prevented significant fire damage, protected the homeowners' belongings, and undoubtedly changed the outcome of the incident.

True courage is acting in the face of danger to help others, and Nathan demonstrated exactly that. His actions embody the very spirit of the Valor Award and serve as an inspiration to all North Carolinians.

As if his story couldn't get any better, Nathan has since accepted an invitation to join the Angier & Black River Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter, continuing his commitment to serving his community.

We were honored to attend the Ore Bank–Pumpkin Center Fire Department's 50th Anniversary celebration at their original fire station.

As part of the celebration, OSFM Fire Marshal Brian Taylor and Jeremy Hunt was proud to present the department with its new ISO Class 2 rating—an outstanding achievement that reflects the department's commitment to excellence in fire protection, training, equipment, and service to the community. This prestigious rating is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the firefighters, leadership, and partners who continually strive to provide the highest level of protection for their citizens.
