It was so exciting to come together at the North Carolina Museum of Art to celebrate this new artwork, “Please Be Seated”, created by Paul Cocksedge that will allow our community to engage with art in the Park. We celebrated with an interactive performance from the Panoramic Dance Project, Broughton Dance, and community members. Many thanks to Tom and Pat Gipson for their generous sponsorship of this beautiful and creative new addition.

You can visit the first town of North Carolina! was founded in 1705 and was also North Carolina’s first port. You can also see the state’s oldest existing church, St. Thomas Church. There are still many historic houses here, including the Palmer-Marsh House. If you’re visiting the area this summer, I suggest you stop in Bath!

I discovered a gem in our State Parks system. Singletary Lake State Park is located in Bladen County, between Fayetteville and Wilmington. The park offers two unique large group camping options in rustic historic cabins. There is also public access for hiking, swimming, fishing, and paddling. It was great to meet our hardworking staff and walk around the beautiful Carolina bay lake.

Lake Waccamaw State Park is situated on the ancestral homelands of the present-day Waccamaw Siouan tribe in Columbus County. Lake Waccamaw is the largest natural Carolina bay lake with 14 miles of beautiful shoreline. It was great visiting and meeting the amazing employees who keep the park safe and running.

We are so excited to begin construction on the renovations at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher creating the largest shark habitat in NC (and so much more!). While construction is underway, visit Discovery Bay at Independence Mall in Wilmington. This interactive experience will feature aquatic habitats, educational exhibits, and a retail store. Very exciting!

You can also still visit our other aquariums at Pine Knoll Shores and on Roanoke Island.
