The countdown to Camp SHINE is ON!! With one month to go, we wanted to spotlight some of the amazing individuals who make Camp possible!

First up is one of our Group Leads, Abbey!

"Hello! My name is Abbey, and I am excited to be part of Camp Shine this summer! I have worked in special education for 12 years and am passionate about helping children learn, grow, and build confidence while having fun. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work with students of many different ages and abilities. My favorite part of working with children is building relationships and celebrating their successes, no matter how big or small. I believe every child deserves to feel included, supported, and celebrated for who they are, and I look forward to creating a positive camp experience where campers can make friends, try new things, and create lasting memories. I am excited to meet all of our campers and help make this a wonderful summer!"

Not only is the 2026 NCDSA Buddy Walk our largest event and heart of our community, it's also our largest fundraiser! If you are able, consider creating a team and asking peers to help support NCDSA, the only statewide, grassroots nonprofit serving people with Down syndrome and their families in NC!

Buddy Walk funds enable us to provide crucial services like family navigation, advocacy, medical outreach, education support, skill building, and social programming. As an audited, accredited and national award winning nonprofit created in 1987 recognized for operational excellence, NCDSA is a go-to resources for families across the state.

In light of a social media influencer’s post about Down syndrome, we’re reminded of the importance of what we do.

Why is our First Call program for new and expectant parents one of the most important things we do?

💙 Because it’s scary to get unexpected news about your baby, but we know that “scary” is only a tiny part of the journey.

💛 Because there’s way too much inaccurate information out there about Down syndrome, but we know the facts.

💙 Because you might feel alone, but we know you’re joining the other 5,999 families who will have a baby with Down syndrome in the US this year.

💛Because you think your life is about to be turned upside down, and we know that’s true… in the best way possible.

If you or someone you know is expecting a baby with Down syndrome, make us your first call for accurate, up-to-date, unbiased information and nonjudgmental support and resources.
