Big News! The facility that houses our project has changed its name to the Office of State Archaeology Conservation Lab (OSA Lab)! This new name better reflects the variety of work the lab undertakes on behalf of archaeological collections across North Carolina. Many of our visitors think staff only work on the shipwreck of La Concorde/Queen Anne’s Revenge and are excited during lab visits to learn just how many other historical sites and archaeological projects are supported.

Don’t worry! This page will continue to be dedicated to updates from the La Concorde/Queen Anne’s Revenge Shipwreck Project and announcements about events! For other news from the lab, be sure to follow North Carolina Office of State Archaeology!

“A large portion of our work will always be La Concorde/Queen Anne’s Revenge, but we are proud to expand our conservation, analytical, and consultation services to other organizations in need of the special care we can provide,” said Head Conservator Kimberly Kenyon. “The lab has built partnerships across the state to support exhibits and to serve our fellow agencies and their visitors by preserving a wider range of North Carolina’s irreplaceable cultural heritage.”

The North Carolina Office of State Archaeology’s (OSA) Underwater Archaeology Branch (UAB) is responsible for managing the state’s submerged cultural resources, including the many beach wreck fragments that frequently appear along our coastlines, especially after significant storms. In September 2025, UAB staff visited several beach wreck sites along the Outer Banks, including one identified as the wreck of the G.A. Kohler. Officially recorded as an archaeological site in 1983 as “NHB0001”, this wreck is a landmark of the Outer Banks and has been spotted and admired by generations of visitors to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The wreck’s identity as the G.A. Kohler is based on the wreck's location and style of construction, connecting it to a four-masted schooner that ran aground during a hurricane in 1933. The wreck was later burned and scrapped for metal during World War II. Periodically, its charred hull fragments become exposed amongst the shifting shoreline of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The purpose of this most recent visit was to collect high-resolution digital photos in order to produce a detailed 3D model of the site. This work both documents the wreck’s current condition and will allow staff to track changes to the site in the future.
