The News & Observer asked the six candidates running for Wake County commissioner whether they would support further property-tax increases to maintain or expand county services.

Gary Hartong answered no. He said Wake County’s annual budget has increased 58% over the past five years and that corresponding property taxes have increased 46%, while the county’s population grew only 12% during the same period.

Christine Kushner said she would support another property-tax increase if necessary.

Mona Singh answered yes, though she said she would prefer that another property-tax increase not be necessary.

Kyle Stogoski answered no. Taxpayers “should not be treated as an unlimited source of revenue.” [This was my favorite of all lines.]

John Adcock answered no. He said Wake County’s tax base continues to grow and argued that revenue generated by that expanding base is sufficient to provide strong government services without further rate increases. [Where are all the $$$$ going from all the folks who have and continue to move here?]

Safiyah Jackson said she would support another property-tax increase if residents, through the county’s annual budget-engagement process, said protecting schools, EMS response times, affordable housing and essential services was worth the additional investment.

What a great Candidate Night! It started with a really beautiful prayer led by Bob Winstead, one of our 2028 candidates who has been extremely busy crossing the state helping our current candidates. Then we heard from candidates running for the State Court of Appeals, for US Congress, NC Senate and NC House, our county Soil & Water Conservation District, and more. Many of our candidates were at the polls for early voting where they had been working all day; one of our candidates left the polls at closing and "flew" in from Wake Forest so he could speak to our members and guests. How he had the energy to make it, I surely do not know, but he did not want to let us down. Our NC GOTV and Turning Point representatives, and our County volunteer coordinator all gave us an update on their work which is so important as they are working for all our candidates. And a bonus was hearing a recap of Gordan Chang's speech that he gave in Raleigh about the future with China.
