Empowering People, Providing Solutions. North Carolina is a state rich in forest resources with almost 60 percent, or 18.3 million acres, of the state covered in forests. The wise use of this resource is important for water and air quality, wildlife habitat, beautiful views, timber resources, and economic prosperity. With 35 million trees produced annually in 80 counties, North Carolina also ranks second in the nation for Christmas tree production.

Dr. Jennifer Fawcett was recently featured on CBS 17's MyCarolina year-round series exploring North Carolina’s forests to discuss prescribed fire.
Watch the interview to learn how carefully planned burns reduce the buildup of pine needles, leaves, and other vegetation that can fuel wildfires, while creating sunlight and space for grasses and other plants that benefit wildlife. Properly planned prescribed fire is good fire that helps protect and restore our NC forests!

All parts of our forests can be used one way or another. One lesser-discussed is pine straw: the fallen needles raked from pine stands and sold as landscape mulch. 🌲
Longleaf pine straw is especially prized for its length, color, and durability, and harvesting it can give landowners alternative income from their longleaf stands. Our publication "Managing Longleaf Pine Straw" covers what you need to know to get started, including stand management and harvesting considerations.

In talking about , we have to highlight timber resources! Timber is an essential product of our forests, and different log sizes and qualities go to different markets:
🌲 Pulpwood: small-diameter trees made into paper and packaging
🌲 Chip-n-saw: mid-size trees that yield both chips and lumber
🌲 Sawlogs: larger logs sawn into lumber for construction and more
🌲 Veneer logs: high-quality logs sliced or peeled into thin layers for plywood and furniture
🌲 Poles & pilings: long, straight trees used for utility poles and marine and construction pilings

Beyond timber, we get MANY products from our forests! Some non-timber forest products include:
🌿 Medicinal: ginseng, goldenseal, black cohosh
🍄 Culinary: mushrooms, ramps, nuts, honey
💐 Floral & decorative: galax, ferns, moss, grapevine
✨ Specialty: dyes, craft materials, + more
Many of these can be grown under a forest canopy through forest farming.
