The President thinks you are backwards and poor if you don’t want a data center in your neighborhood.

Michael Whatley — Do you think folks are “backwards and poor” for not wanting to be neighbors with a data center? What about folks who don’t want their energy bills to skyrocket from it?

U.S. communities that do not welcome data centers into their neighborhoods want to be “backwards and poor,” President Donald Trump said Monday, backing the data center and artificial intelligence boom even as Americans oppose the construction of the resource-intensive facilities.

Earlier this week, the Asheville City Council voted 5-2 to terminate its contract with Flock Safety.

“Flock cameras,” as they are commonly called, are automated license plate readers that use artificial intelligence to assist law enforcement when a vehicle is suspected of being involved in a crime. They are highly controversial due to privacy and misuse concerns.

There have been several instances of law enforcement abusing this technology to unlawfully surveil people, including in Charlotte and Mooresville.

Civil liberties groups have called for their removal, citing concerns about privacy and mas surveillance.

Flock Safety had installed 11 automated license plate readers across the city.

The resolution to terminate the contract orders all city employees to immediately stop using any data or images collected from the Flock cameras.

There will also be a review of the use of surveillance technology going forward.

Despite the end of Asheville’s contract with Flock Safety, the city still has an existing contract with Axon, which has installed stationary license plate readers, as well as cameras for law enforcement.

One day our state budget will do more than provide crumbs for working people, but instead handily meet the needs of all North Carolinians. We can and must think bigger.

Our Constitution opens by daring us to form a more perfect Union. It’s an enduring aspiration and a challenge that every generation inherits: to leave our country more just, more free, and better than we found it.

From abolitionists and the labor movement to suffragists, civil rights leaders, and LGBTQ+ advocates — each generation has pushed our country closer to its founding promise. Now, it’s our Union to perfect.

Happy Independence Day.
