NC State Extension Military Outreach

NC State Extension Military Outreach NC State Extension Military Outreach NC State Extension Military Outreach (NCSEMO) replaces the NC Operation Military Kids initiative as of March 31, 2015.

While NCSEMO will continue to support military youth and families in the state as Operation Military Kids did, an additional emphasis will be added to provide additional support for veterans and military communities. NCSEMO will continue to collaborate with partners around the state to provide quality educational experiences for youth and their families, utilizing a network of volunteers and Exten

sion professionals. The partnership with NC 4-H programs will continue, particularly in support of the provision of 4-H club programs on active duty installations and in specifically identified areas for geographically dispersed military children. NCSEMO will:

1) Provide awareness training to help communities better understand military families and veterans;
2) Provide training on military culture and deployment cycle to help communities better support military families and veterans; and
3) Develop educational programs to support and extend networks to address the needs of geographically dispersed military youth. Working with military and non-military resources, the NCSEMO will focus on two major programming facets:

1) Connecting military families to local resources and networks and
2) Collaborating with partners to plan educational, recreational, and social programs that will help increase awareness of military life while supporting military youth, their families, and veterans. NC State Extension Military Outreach is proud to support the more than 123,622 active duty, reserve and guard troops who call our state home. Particularly during this time of global deployment, these Service Members need to know that their families here at home are surrounded by supportive citizens, offering a cadre of services and resources to help ease the stress of pre-deployment, deployment and post-deployment. Approximately 109,375 military youth from the ages of 0 to 18 call North Carolina home.

Move-mber: North Carolina 4-H Fall Moving Challenge

https://nc4h.ces.ncsu.edu/2020/10/move-mber-north-carolina-4-h-fall-moving-challenge/

Goal

The goal of the North Carolina 4-H “Move-mber” Fall Moving Challenge is to get our youth outside and moving. With so much screen time these days with virtual learning, our goal is to encourage and inspire our youth to get outside and exercise. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that children and adolescents be active for at least 60 minutes every day! These guidelines can contribute to overall health, reduce stress, and decrease the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes.1 Walking is a great way to get the physical activity needed, explore the great outdoors, and spend time with family or friends! Learn how to be physically active while social distancing.

To Participate

Walk/Hike/Bike for at least 60 minutes per week, for at least four weeks, in November. We encourage you to be active for more than this amount if you can! After completing each walk/hike/ride, enter your results via this Google Form. Each week will have a theme related to the 4 H’s. Walks/Hikes/Rides must be completed November 1 through November 30, 2020. If you want to explore local municipal parks, county parks, or state parks, be sure to check for hours of operation and trail conditions.

To Register

To register, complete this online registration through Eventbrite.

If you want to, you can share how you were active outside! All weeks must be entered via this Google Form by December 1 at 5 p.m.

Weekly Themes

Each week has a themed activity to keep you motivated! Use your Head, Heart, Hands, & Health to follow along with these activities. Click to access the activities handout.

Finisher Awards

For those who log at least one outdoor adventure per week and complete the challenge, a 4-H branded buff (neck gaiter) will be awarded to every registered finisher for the first 250 4-H’ers to complete the challenge. We encourage 4-H adults to get outside and participate as well, but finisher prizes are for youth participants.
