Every piece of litter picked up from a river, stream or creek helps protect water quality, wildlife and the communities that depend on clean water.

June is National Rivers Month! If you're participating in a river cleanup, remember to put safety first:
🐢 Be aware of local wildlife
🧤 Wear durable, protective gloves
🌿 Avoid poison ivy and other harmful plants
🩹 Do not enter the water with open cuts or wounds. Follow the guidance for avoiding recreational water illnesses at ncdhhs.gov.
💧 Pay attention to water quality conditions
🔍Find tools for tracking water quality at deq.nc.gov.
🌿 Track or submit algal bloom reports using DEQ’s bloom dashboard at algae.nc.gov.

Ever wondered where a piece of litter might end up after entering a local waterway?

Check out the River Runner tool to explore how creeks and streams connect to larger rivers, sounds, and the ocean: https://river-runner.samlearner.com/. The path may surprise you!

North Carolina remains in a drought, even though some areas may have seen some rain. 💧

The visible signs of drought include low water levels in lakes and streams, brown lawns, stressed crops and local water use restrictions.

How do the experts determine the state’s drought status?

Each week, experts from across the state assess rainfall, soil moisture, streamflows, reservoir levels and other data to monitor drought conditions and update North Carolina’s drought map.

The Western NC Recreational Water Monitoring Program is hard at work behind the scenes to test and protect the mountain waters that we all love to use during the summer time.

We were thrilled to have Secretary Reid Wilson out in the field to see this essential work firsthand.

The State Water Infrastructure Authority and DEQ have awarded federal and state drinking water and wastewater funding supporting 217 Helene projects that will help 83 communities across 29 counties repair and strengthen their infrastructure after the storm.

All available federal Helene funds for drinking water and wastewater systems have been awarded, improving resilience for the future.

North Carolina’s DEQ was the first state agency in the Helene-impacted states to award all water infrastructure post-Helene funds, which means these systems will be repaired faster and will be ready and resilient for future storms.

We are grateful to collaborate with our federal and state partners at the EPA Region 4 State Revolving Fund All-States Meeting in Asheville. Secretary Reid Wilson shared NC’s commitment to securing safe, reliable water infrastructure for all communities, as we continue to invest resources to make clean water accessible to the people of our state.

A major milestone for North Carolina's Helene recovery. 💧
