Blue Jay Point County Park

Blue Jay Point County Park Blue Jay Point County Park is a 236-acre park located on the shores of Falls Lake in northern Wake County.

Blue Jay Point County Park is a 236-acre park that was once primarily agricultural land. A majority of this acreage is now second-growth forestlands. We have roughly three acres dedicated to open play fields, playgrounds, an environmental education center and an overnight lodge. Blue Jay Point is a peninsula, bordered on three sides by Raleigh's primary drinking water supply, Falls Lake. The lake

is a reservoir managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Park boundaries are marked by orange blazes on trees and with signs. All local, state and federal laws apply while inside the park. The park officially opened its gates to the public on January 1, 1992. Learn more about Blue Jay Point County Park at: http://www.wake.gov/parks/bluejay

When you imagine bioluminescent insects, your first thought might be fireflies. Pictured here is another insect that lights up: a glowworm (Phengodes sp.). Glowworms come in two forms: larviform (which is what is pictured) and a winged form. Female and young glowworms are larviform. Adult males are the winged form. As their name indicates, the worms do glow!

Let's shell-ebrate World Turtle Day!

This time of year, you may be lucky enough to see a turtle crossing your path as it searches for a nesting site or a water source. You can help the turtle cross safely by moving it to the side it was heading.

If you come across an injured turtle, you can contact the Turtle Rescue Team at NC State: https://cvm.ncsu.edu/outreach/resources/turtle-rescue-team/

With fawning season in full swing, the NC Wildlife Resources Commission is once again reminding people not to approach, touch or remove any white-tailed deer fawns they encounter over the next few weeks.

From late April through June, white-tailed does across North Carolina are giving birth. White-tails are a β€œhider” species, which means the female will hide her fawn in vegetation during the first two or three weeks of its life as she feeds. When left alone fawns have an excellent chance of survival.

Officials urge the public that if they find a fawn to leave it where it is and check on it the following day. If it is still there and bleating loudly, appears thin, injured or has visible diarrhea, do not remove it. Instead, contact a local, permitted fawn rehabilitator.

Same sign, three years later.

Our 2026 spring is looking very different than the one back in 2023. In April 2023, the lake was 5 ft above its normal level due to heavy rains. Today, the lake is currently 4.5 ft below its normal level due to the extreme drought. Whoever was doing a rain dance three years ago needs to start back again!

It is the time of year to watch where you step, as many of our reptile friends are on the move. Stunningly beautiful copperheads are the most common venomous snake found in the Triangle. They are identifiable by Hershey's Kiss markings along their sides.

While encountering a copperhead can be scary, the best thing to do is give them space. You can use a spray of water from a garden hose to get them to move along. If you come across one while walking at Blue Jay, you are welcome to call our office at (919) 870-4330 or talk to a staff member who can encourage it to move to a safer location.
