Haywood Community College is expanding some of its training programs with a new Outdoor Training Facility. 🥳

Located down the road from the main campus is a large parking lot with poles near the entrance. They may look like ordinary poles to some, but to the students, they represent something much bigger: the climb to their future as electrical linemen.

⚒️ Camila Ramirez Guerrero studies engineering at Durham Technical Community College — and she’s one of the school’s growing number of female students launching careers in male-dominated trades like construction. 🙌 This summer, she interned with the construction company Skanska, which is working to construct Durham Tech’s new life sciences building.

She’s also working on her submission to an international “microhome competition” that asks for designs for an off-the-grid tiny home for a young couple. The competition, organized by Buildner, asks for an architectural solution to an economic, social or cultural challenge.

So Ramirez designed a tiny home for the Galápagos Islands, which has always been one of her favorite places in her home country. She calls the home ENDEMIA after the endemic species of the islands and their ability to adapt — a quality she wants the home to have as well.

“I’m always thinking about the people that are going to inhabit these places,” said Camila Ramirez Guerrero.

❝Let me be real clear: I’m not the most important person in North Carolina. You know who is? The folks you serve, and I serve, every day — the students,” Sullivan said. “I didn’t come to North Carolina for a job. I came here to do the good work that you and I know needs to be done.❞

Last week, Dr. Monty Sullivan, the new Acting President & CEO of the N.C. Community College System, addressed an audience of community college trustees and presidents during a seminar held by the N.C. Association of Community College Trustees.

[OP-ED] ❝When conversations first began around the SBCN Startup Showdown, Powered by Wells Fargo, it would have been easy to describe it as a statewide pitch competition. After spending the past several months helping bring the initiative to life, I see it differently. The competition is only one part of a much larger story: how North Carolina’s community colleges invest in entrepreneurs.❞ - John Loyack
