Textile engineering seniors recently took on the challenge of turning two rice bags and $10 into something new and useful. In partnership with Rise Against Hunger, an international non-profit that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food and aid to developing nations, the students developed prototypes that would be functional and helpful.

Graduate student Pablo Ortiz Paciello is tackling a global problem right here at NC State. His patent pending system collects carbon dioxide before it can escape into the atmosphere and converts it to a stable form. By implementing this system at compost facilities, an already environmentally friendly process will come even closer to being carbon neutral.

One week ago, we had the privilege of announcing the naming of Koch Hall in honor of three-time alumna and NASA astronaut Christina Koch.

“Today, students are hard at work in these buildings all around us. Each of them, chasing their dream. We may not know them all by name just yet. However, they will know the name of Christina Koch." — Chancellor Kevin Howell

In addition to unveiling the new name of one of our engineering buildings, Christina spent time with students, giving out advice and rockwall climbing, one of her favorite hobbies.

Last week we celebrated the Class of 2030 at the annual College of Engineering Welcome. Our newest students were welcomed by Interim Dean Veena Misra and alumnus Harry Sideris, both of whom ensured our first-years that they are right where they're supposed to be and on the path to success.

We could not be prouder of alumna Christina Koch and for one of our buildings to bear her name!

“I became excited by the idea that we could combine human creativity with AI and robotics to dramatically accelerate discovery. Instead of doing science one experiment at a time, we can build laboratories that learn continuously, adapt intelligently and help researchers navigate chemical and materials spaces that are far too complex to explore by intuition alone.”
