U.S. Army Soldiers with the North Carolina National Guard’s 236th Brigade Engineer Battalion reached a significant milestone in North Carolina National Guard history as they marked the deactivation of the 236th BEB in Durham, on May 17, 2026. The ceremony also recognized the activation of the M/119th Multi-Functional Reconnaissance Company, the 230th Military Intelligence Company and the 30th Signal Company. This transition marks a major step for the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team as it evolves into the 30th Mobile Brigade Combat Team.

The lineage of Headquarters Company, 236th Brigade Engineer Battalion, began in 1878 as the Durham Light Infantry. Over time, the unit became part of the North Carolina National Guard and was mobilized for the Mexican border campaign in 1916 and again for World War I in 1917. Redesignated within the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, the unit distinguished itself by helping break the Hindenburg Line in 1918.
