UPDATE from NC Coalition on Aging
7/18/2022

Coming Together to Advocate for Older Adults

Budget Update

Gov. Roy Cooper waited to the last possible day to sign the state budget into law on July 11, 2022. The Governor said vetoing the bill would be “counterproductive” as he is continuing to negotiate to expand Medicaid coverage. The NC General Assembly passed the spending plan for the 2022-23 fiscal year on July 1st. The Joint Conference Committee Report on the Current Operations Appropriations Act of 2022 or House Bill 103 was released on June 28, 2022. A Summary of Key Items Related to Aging is available on our website. On the same day, the Governor also announced the public health emergency will be lifted starting on Aug. 15.

On the federal side, the House Committee on Appropriations recently approved bills to provide federal discretionary funding for the upcoming fiscal year 2023 (FY23), which begins on October 1. Increases are proposed for many of the aging services programs and agencies that older adults and the organizations who serve them rely upon. You can view the funding amounts and learn more information in a blog article from the National Council on Aging here. Next steps include consideration by the full House, Senate approval of its proposals, and crafting a final package to provide funding for FY23.
