Today, I joined the Hamlet community to remember the 25 lives lost 35 years ago in the tragic Imperial Foods fire.

We honor the victims, their families, and the survivors whose lives were forever changed. We must also remember the important workplace safety reforms that followed and continue working to ensure every North Carolinian can return home safely from work each day.

We will never forget the 25.

With data centers becoming a major issue across North Carolina — and especially in communities like ours — my position is straightforward: No family, farmer, or small business should be forced to subsidize the enormous power demands of a multibillion-dollar corporation.

That’s why I voted for the Ratepayer Protection Act. This legislation requires large data centers to bear the infrastructure costs they create, strengthens protections of local resources and communities, and prevents private property from being taken through eminent domain for these projects.

We also ended their electricity sales tax break in the budget, all so YOU don’t get stuck paying their costs.

Economic development can bring jobs and opportunity — but it must never come at the expense of the people who already live, work, farm, and pay utility bills here. If a data center wants to operate in North Carolina, it should pay its own way and respect the will of the community around it.

It was a pleasure joining Rep. Neal Jackson and Sen. Tom McInnis for the Southern Pines Town Hall Open House yesterday. We enjoyed connecting with the town employees and councilmembers — and learning more about the services they provide to the community. Congratulations to Southern Pines on its new civic home! 🏛️

The North Carolina House delivered meaningful results this session — cutting taxes, raising teacher and law enforcement pay, strengthening public safety, protecting families, and supporting communities still recovering from Hurricane Helene.

I’m proud of the advancements we made and remain committed to fighting for the people of Richmond and Moore counties.

BREAKING NEWS 🚨 The new State Budget delivers major wins for Richmond County and Moore County.

This plan delivers targeted investments in public safety, infrastructure, health care, and community services that will strengthen our region and support local needs across the board.

Richmond County highlights include:
• $100,000 for volunteer fire departments
• $400,000 for the Samaritan Colony (opioid abatement)
• $250,000 for Rockingham water treatment facility upgrades
• $200,000 for Hamlet water and wastewater infrastructure
• $25,000 for Dobbins Heights parks and recreation improvements
• $25,000 for the Town of Ellerbe parks and recreation improvements

Moore County highlights include:
• $250,000 for capital improvements
• $500,000 for the Davis Community Center
• $425,000 for a new Moore County Sheriff’s Office forensic facility
• $50,000 for the Moore County Sheriff’s Office
• $100,000 for Moore County volunteer fire departments
• $500,000 for water and wastewater infrastructure
• $200,000 for the Moore Free & Charitable Clinic
• $50,000 for Family Promise of Moore County
• $1,000,000 for the Still Us Foundation (dementia care)
• $500,000 for Adult & Teen Challenge of the Sandhills (opioid abatement)
• $200,000 for emergency energy improvements in Southern Pines
• $100,000 for the Town of Pinebluff
• One additional deputy clerk position for Moore County

Additional provisions affecting Moore County:
• Transfer of the Samarcand Training Academy to the SBI
• Eligibility for the Chantal Infrastructure Assistance Fund

This budget prioritizes public safety, strengthens critical infrastructure, and invests in local organizations and services that serve families across the region. I’m grateful to have worked alongside Rep. Neal Jackson, Sen. Dave Craven, Rep. John Sauls, and Sen. Tom McInnis to advocate for our communities in Richmond and Moore counties.

Appreciated meeting with the folks from Hunt 2 Conserve in Raleigh to discuss wildlife migration and the importance of wildlife crossings along our transportation corridors.

These conversations are especially timely as we look at long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Helene, including opportunities to improve infrastructure like I-40 in ways that better protect both people and wildlife.

Congratulations to all of the Richmond County students who have been awarded the Golden LEAF Foundation Scholarship! This honor reflects years of hard work, determination, and commitment to their education — and I am proud to see them continuing their studies at outstanding colleges and universities across North Carolina.

These students represent the very best of rural North Carolina, and I look forward to all they will accomplish as they pursue their goals and, in time, give back to the communities they call home.

RICHMOND COUNTY — Six Richmond County students have been selected to receive up to a $14,000 Golden LEAF Scholarship, along with 209 other rural North Carolina students.
