As Carteret County PPO Kiki Hampton was leaving the courthouse, she noticed a young woman standing outside the Magistrate’s Office, and wearing a wedding dress. The bride said she was waiting for the Magistrate to return – and also mentioned that she didn’t have flowers for her ceremony. As luck would have it, PPO Hampton had on hand some fresh-cut flowers from her own garden, which she’d brought to brighten her office that day - and gifted them to the bride.

What PPO Hampton didn’t know was just how much that simple gesture would mean.

After the ceremony, the bride reached back out to share that her father, a law enforcement officer, had been killed in the line of duty. She said the kindness she received that day from PPO Hampton felt like a blessing from her father and a message of love and support on one of the most important days of her life.

PPO Hampton for reminding us that small acts of kindness can make a big impact, and that human connection is at the heart of what we do.

We proudly celebrate the graduates of our inaugural Honor Guard Academy. These staff have volunteered their time and taken on special responsibilities to honor those who have served our nation, our state and our agency.

Our Honor Guard provides ceremonial services at funerals and memorials, presents the colors at state events, and supports the USO at RDU when fallen service members arrive or transfer through the airport.

We are grateful for their willingness to serve others with honor, dignity and respect.

Even on his way to work and during his lunch break, Field Training Officer (FTO) Michael Norman stepped up to help those in need. On his way to work, FTO Norman witnessed a vehicle overturned against the median and stopped to help the unconscious motorist. He cut away a deployed airbag that was obstructing access and assisted EMS and the Fire Department with safely extracting the individual from the vehicle.

Weeks later, while on his lunch break, FTO Norman witnessed another accident. He stopped to check on those involved and attended to an elderly woman who was shaken up until law enforcement and EMS arrived.

For his willingness to go above and beyond to help others, FTO Norman received the Beyond the Call Award in Forsyth County, NC. Thank you, FTO Norman, for your quick response, compassion, and commitment to helping keep our communities safe!

A strong school year starts with supporting the educators who make it possible.

Through the NC Connecting As One to Recognize Educators (C.O.R.E.) initiative, is partnering with the North Carolina Department of Revenue and other state agencies to support teachers as they prepare for the new school year.

This year, our employees will volunteer in 13 schools across North Carolina, helping set up classrooms, organize supplies and assist with other school identified needs. By volunteering our time, we hope to make the start of the school year a little easier for the educators preparing their classrooms.

We are proud to strengthen community connections while supporting the educators who help shape North Carolina’s future.
