Mike Bickle, Robert Morris, Tony Evans, Brian Houston, Ravi Zacharias, Bill Hybels, and many others… all exposed for moral failures while holding top leadership roles in some of the largest ministries in modern history.
It’s heartbreaking both for them and especially for the people who have experienced the shock, pain, and loss of trust that resulted from these revelations. So much for us to pray for.
What is happening?
Well, clearly the Lord Jesus is cleaning His church. But if you believe the answer to these scandals is for us to implement better leadership policies and procedures, vet potential leaders more intensely, or engage in other actions to try to control the problem, I want to suggest you’re missing His actual goal.
The church (ekklesia) Jesus is building is NOT an institution, corporation, or any other kind of human organization.
It is a royal family of sons and daughters.
In describing the body of Christ we find the word “brethren” used 231 times, “saints” 61 times, and the phrase “one another”41 times in the New Testament.
This is not the language of organizational hierarchy. And as Jesus made crystal clear in Matthew 20:25-28, the world’s leadership style and practice is forbidden in His family.
Even so, we know the church did become an institution, an organization, with its leadership elevated over people into positions rivaling those found in the corporate business world. In His mercy and grace, Jesus overlooked and allowed this aberration to continue for many generations.
But no longer. His grace on this man-made church culture has been lifting because He wants what He originally intended for His church to manifest in these last days. The incredible pressure upon those “at the top” is increasingly becoming unbearable because He never intended for any one person to occupy such a position over His people. (See 3 John 1:9-10 for an early example of this deception.)
So because of this, the human frailties we have been seeing are actually inevitable. Whatever we humanly initiate, we must humanly sustain.
“Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it;” (Psalm 127:1) This spiritual reality is now being actively enforced by none other than the Head of the church, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Once we understand that, we can begin to see that the institutional, organized church is, sadly, a house of cards. And that house is crumbling.
How ought we respond? And what does it mean for those He has called to serve His body?
Jesus’ plan was that His body always remain a family. This means that those of us who have been walking a little longer with Him than others are given a responsibility to share our experience and wisdom as older brothers and sisters, or mothers and fathers, who live to love, serve and empower everyone in their sphere of influence towards Christ-likeness and fulfilled destiny.
It’s really as easy and simple as that.
If you don’t have (or are not allowed to have) that kind of relationship with the leader(s) in your life, you’re missing out on the fullness of what Jesus paid for you to enjoy. Ask Him to lead you to those who are living His kingdom family values and become involved with what He’s doing through them.
Those with a vested interest in the status quo will undoubtedly be offended by what I’ve written here. My prayer and plea is that you humbly ask Him to show you what He’s doing, and then choose to follow. Feel free to reach out if you’d like some help in this time of transition. 🙂
