What Jesus Left Behind

“He [Jesus] did not leave an army; He did not leave an organization, in the ordinary sense. What He left, instead, was a little redemptive fellowship made up of extremely common people whose total impact was miraculous . . . . It is hard for us to visualize what early Christianity was like. Certainly it was very different from the Christianity known to us today.

There were no fine buildings . . . . There was no hierarchy; there were no theological seminaries; there were no Christian colleges; there were no Sunday Schools; there were no choirs. Only small groups of believers – small fellowships.

In the beginning there wasn’t even a New Testament. The New Testament itself was not so much a cause of these fellowships as a result of them. Thus the first books of the New Testament were the letters written to the little fellowships partly because of their difficulties, dangers and temptations. All that they had was the fellowship; nothing else; no standing; no prestige; no honor . . . .

The early Christians were not a people of standing, but they had a secret power among them, and the secret power resulted from the way in which they were members one of another . . . . What occurred in the ancient civilization was the organic development of the fellowship, but never a merely individual Christianity.

That would not have been able to survive. The fellowship was the only thing that could win. The early Christians came together to strengthen one another and to encourage one another in their humble gatherings such as are described in 1 Cor. 14, and then they went out into their ministry in the Greco-Roman world . . . .

All of these parts [of the world] were touched because the fellowship itself had such intensity, such vitality, and such power . . . . If all the salt is washed out of [the fellowship], if all that is left is just the worldly emphasis of respectability and fine buildings, an ecclesiastical structure and conventional religion with the redemptive power gone, it isn’t partly good; it isn’t any good.

Christ is saying that mild religion, far from being of partial value, is of utterly no value . . . . It is easy to go on with the motions; it is easy to continue a structure; it is easy to go on with a system. But Christ says it isn’t worth a thing.”

From Elton Trueblood, The Yoke of Christ and Other Sermons (New York, NY: Harper & Brothers, 1958).

Mike Bickle, Robert Morris, Tony Evans, Brian Houston, Ravi Zacharias, Bill Hybels, and many others… all exposed for moral failures while holding top leadership roles in some of the largest ministries in modern history.

It’s heartbreaking both for them and especially for the people who have experienced the shock, pain, and loss of trust that resulted from these revelations. So much for us to pray for.

What is happening?

Well, clearly the Lord Jesus is cleaning His church. But if you believe the answer to these scandals is for us to implement better leadership policies and procedures, vet potential leaders more intensely, or engage in other actions to try to control the problem, I want to suggest you’re missing His actual goal.

The church (ekklesia) Jesus is building is NOT an institution, corporation, or any other kind of human organization.

It is a royal family of sons and daughters.

In describing the body of Christ we find the word “brethren” used 231 times, “saints” 61 times, and the phrase “one another”41 times in the New Testament.

This is not the language of organizational hierarchy. And as Jesus made crystal clear in Matthew 20:25-28, the world’s leadership style and practice is forbidden in His family.

Even so, we know the church did become an institution, an organization, with its leadership elevated over people into positions rivaling those found in the corporate business world. In His mercy and grace, Jesus overlooked and allowed this aberration to continue for many generations.

But no longer. His grace on this man-made church culture has been lifting because He wants what He originally intended for His church to manifest in these last days. The incredible pressure upon those “at the top” is increasingly becoming unbearable because He never intended for any one person to occupy such a position over His people. (See 3 John 1:9-10 for an early example of this deception.)

So because of this, the human frailties we have been seeing are actually inevitable. Whatever we humanly initiate, we must humanly sustain.

“Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it;” (Psalm 127:1) This spiritual reality is now being actively enforced by none other than the Head of the church, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Once we understand that, we can begin to see that the institutional, organized church is, sadly, a house of cards. And that house is crumbling.

How ought we respond? And what does it mean for those He has called to serve His body?

Jesus’ plan was that His body always remain a family. This means that those of us who have been walking a little longer with Him than others are given a responsibility to share our experience and wisdom as older brothers and sisters, or mothers and fathers, who live to love, serve and empower everyone in their sphere of influence towards Christ-likeness and fulfilled destiny.

It’s really as easy and simple as that.

If you don’t have (or are not allowed to have) that kind of relationship with the leader(s) in your life, you’re missing out on the fullness of what Jesus paid for you to enjoy. Ask Him to lead you to those who are living His kingdom family values and become involved with what He’s doing through them.

Those with a vested interest in the status quo will undoubtedly be offended by what I’ve written here. My prayer and plea is that you humbly ask Him to show you what He’s doing, and then choose to follow. Feel free to reach out if you’d like some help in this time of transition. 🙂

God's great "reset" of the church is underway, and He wants us all to be part of it.

Ekklesia Arising: A Commentary on What Jesus Envisioned for His Church

God has initiated a “great reset” in the Church. This reset can be described as an awakening in the Body of Christ that will re-position us to become what Jesus originally envisioned for His ekklesia. The result will be a dramatic and radical change to what we have known as “church,” includi...
