Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata L.)

USDA Native Status: L48

Soil Moisture: Wet, Medium, Dry
Seeds require 30 days of cold moist stratification

Blue vervain has tall spiky flowers. It will grow up to 6' in wet conditions. It will be shorter in drier conditions. It's a larval host to the Common Buckeye butterfly and other Lepidoptera (butterfly and moth larva). It looks best planted in groupings and paired with a white flower. Native bees love the nectar and the seeds attract lots of birds.

Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata)

USDA Native Status: L48
Water Use: High
Light Requirement: Sun , Part Shade
Soil Moisture: Moist , Wet, Medium
Seeds require 30 days of cold moist stratification

Swamp or Rose milkweed makes a great raingarden plant. It is a host for Monarch Butterflies. In my opinion, they actually prefer it over common milkweed; as the leaves don't go bad early in the season like common milkweed. It looks really pretty when planted in clusters. Try pairing it with a white spiky flower like aster or culver's root. The native and honey bees love it.

Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum)

USDA Native Status: L48
Light Requirement: Sun , Part Shade , Shade

Boneset is a great raingarden plant. If you wish to stop mowing your ditches, it grows really well there too. It is a host plant for Lepidoptera(butterfly and moth larva). It has pretty flat white flowers like yarrow. It can grow up to 5' in the right conditions. It looks beautiful when grouped together with blazing star or other purple or pink flowers.

Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum)

USDA Native Status: L48
Light Requirement: Sun, part shade
Soil Moisture: Dry , Moist , Wet
Drought Tolerance: High
Seeds require 60 days of cold moist stratification

This beauty grows almost 10' high in the right conditions. It typically gets around 6', with large yellow flowers the finches love. It attracts lots of native bees who love the nectar and burrow into the stems over winter. It's a host for Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) larva. Many birds, bees, and other bugs use the plant as a water source. The water collects after a rain in the large leaves, hence the name, cup plant.

A 2-4 ft. perennial with dense, spikey, bright purple flowers. It smells nice, is beautiful, and is easy to grow from seed. It's a host plant for Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). It also attracts hummingbirds and lots of bees. It's versatile growing in almost any soil type.
