Twist Out Cancer

Twist Out Cancer Twist Out Cancer is a global community that provides social and emotional support to those touched by cancer. Thus: Twist Out Cancer was born.

Twist Out Cancer (TOC) was built on the belief that when you share, the world opens up. At the age of 29, Jenna Benn Shersher was diagnosed with grey zone lymphoma—a rare form of cancer which affects less than 300 people in the United States. Midway through treatment, Jenna, a dancer at heart, was isolated due to her compromised immune system. Alone and longing for the days when she could dance fr

eely, she created an online video of herself doing the twist. She asked her friends to join her on her virtual dance floor, and within days, Jenna’s challenge was met by hundreds of videos of thousands of people dancing around the world. She no longer felt alone but instead connected to and supported by a community of twisters. When Jenna completed treatment she knew that she wanted to give back in a meaningful way. She recognized the power of sharing and the importance of creating a support community that caters to the psychosocial needs of those affected by cancer.

CHEFS COLLAB × PLATES WITH PURPOSE 🍽️❤️

Five incredible chefs. One table. One purpose.

On September 22, some of our favorite chefs are coming together at River Twice for a very special dinner benefiting Twist Out Cancer and our creative arts programming for people touched by cancer.

Featuring:
Randy Rucker — River Twice & Little Water
Frankie Ramirez — Amá
Phila Lorn — Mawn & Sao
Eric Leveillee — The DeBruce
Alexandra Holt — Roxanne

Plates With Purpose was created around a simple idea: food is community. Gathering around a table creates space for stories to be shared, friendships to begin, and people to feel cared for, the same spirit of connection at the heart of Twist Out Cancer.

This night is about more than an extraordinary meal. It’s about bringing together chefs, restaurants and diners to support our cancer community and remind people that no one should face cancer alone.

📅 Tuesday, September 22
🍽️ Two seatings: 5:30 PM + 8:00 PM

"Working with Brushes with Cancer has provided a new purpose to my life and artwork, and immeasurable inspiration. Interpreting someone's story into a piece of artwork is an honor that I do not take for granted. Being involved with such an empowering community and organization has been life changing."

Thank you, Erin, for sharing your gift with our community and helping turn stories of survivorship into art.

Brushes With Cancer pairs visual artists with "Inspirations" — patients, survivors, thrivers, previvors and caregivers — to create art together over four to six months. Each pair meets in person and/or virtually, with support from meetups, mentors, and Twist Out Cancer staff along the way.

The program comes together for a celebratory art exhibition on September 24, 2026, at the Arsht, bringing participants, their families, and the Miami community together to share, connect, and heal.

RSVPs open September 8 — mark your calendar! 🎨

Co-presented by Twist Out Cancer and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

Our founder and CEO, Jenna Benn Shersher, was featured in Rare Disease Advisor alongside TargetCancer Foundation's Paul Palma, in a piece exploring how rare cancer diagnoses have led to community-driven advocacy.

Jenna shared her story — from her 2010 diagnosis with gray zone lymphoma, a blood cancer affecting fewer than 300 Americans a year, to the moment she recorded herself dancing to "The Twist" and found an entire community responding back. That moment became the foundation for Twist Out Cancer.

The article also covers where Twist Out Cancer stands today: over 288,000 people reached, 1,704 Brushes with Cancer participants, and active programming across 26 states, including new partnerships with the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation and Blueprint Medicines.

"When you create a safe space for people to share what they're carrying, something shifts. They feel seen, they feel heard, they feel less alone."

🎙️ New Episode: Stories of Hope and Inspiration

In this episode, Twist Out Cancer Advisory Board Member Soraya Fata sits down with Megan Scherer, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Worth The Wait, to talk about turning the loss of fertility into a path toward building family.

After her own family navigated cancer-related infertility, Megan and her husband Mike started Worth The Wait to help others access the care, resources, and information they needed but couldn't find. Over the last five years, the organization has grown into a national resource, awarding more than 250 grants to families across the country.

Tune in to hear how financial support, education, and advocacy are opening doors for patients and families facing fertility preservation decisions.

In 2024, our partnership with Blueprint Medicines brought a licensed Brushes with Cancer program to their community — matching artists with individuals touched by cancer to create meaningful, one-of-a-kind pieces of art.

Partnerships like this help keep Twist Out Cancer's programs free for the people who need them.
