‼️🔥Prescribed Burn Notice🔥‼️

As part of ongoing management and conservation efforts by the City Horticulturist and the Department of Public Works, the City is preparing to conduct a small prescribed burn in the Wildwood Park meadow area in the coming days, pending suitable weather conditions. Tentatively, and weather permitting, the burn will take place on the morning of Friday, March 20th.

The burn will be conducted by experienced professionals from the Virginia Department of Forestry working with the Radford Fire Department and City staff. Prescribed fires are carefully planned and carried out under specific weather conditions to ensure they remain safe and well controlled.

The planned burn will take placed in the meadow area near the park entrance and along Park Rd. This will cover about one acre of mostly grassy vegetation.

Why burn?

Prescribed fire is an effective tool for managing meadow habitats. Fire helps control invasive plants, reduces the buildup of old vegetation, and encourages the growth of native grasses and wildflowers that support local pollinators and other wildlife. Mowing alone cannot provide many of these ecological benefits.

This project will also give staff and fire professionals an opportunity to train and work together in a controlled setting, while allowing our community to observe how the meadow responds and improves throughout the coming growing season.

Why this time of year?

Late winter and early spring typically provide ideal conditions for prescribed fire, when last year’s grasses burn readily but many desirable plants are still dormant.

Stay tuned for updates about this project—including what to expect on the day of the burn—and other ways we are working to manage and care for the natural resources of Wildwood Park.

Thank you to the Department of Public Works and the City Horticulturist for their planning and work on this project!

More information will be posted Thursday afternoon (March 19th)!

On February 12th at 8:20 pm, Radford Fire/EMS and Radford City Police Department were dispatched for a structure fire in the 400 Block of Downey St.

Initially, Medic 1, Medic 3 and Engine 2 responded. Engine 2 stopped at a hydrant to drop a supply line and then proceeded to the scene.

Once on scene, a 2-story multi-family dwelling was found with fire coming from the Bravo side of the structure, and a working fire assignment was called.

Firefighters pulled a crosslay and made entry to the second floor and began fire suppression. Additionally, a primary search was completed after unconfirmed reports that all residents had evacuated, no victims were found. After approximately 10 minutes, the bulk of the fire was under control and firefighters began overhaul, finding and extinguishing hot spots. Truck 1, EMS-1, Brush 1 and 100 (Fire Chief) also responded. Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Department Engine 3 and Chief 3 responded as mutual aid.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be a grease fire caused by cooking.

Five people are displaced and currently being assisted by Bondurant Realty. Two patients were evaluated by EMS as a precaution and released on scene. One cat was rescued from the building. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.

We would like to thank our 911 dispatchers, mutual aid firefighters, and police officers for their assistance! Please keep those affected in your thoughts and prayers!
