As we celebrate the City of Radcliff’s 70th year since incorporation (1956–2026), we are taking a look back at the entrepreneurial spirit that laid our city’s foundation. Long before Radcliff became the thriving community it is today, a dedicated line of small businesses stepped up to build and strengthen our local economy.

Many of our earliest business pioneers actually relocated from New Stithton, bringing their work ethic and community focus straight to Radcliff.

Earl Brown was one of the very first to build a store right here in Radcliff. Having previously operated a general store in New Stithton, he established Brown's Grocery, which stood as a local staple for nearly 35 years. The historic photo below shows inside Brown’s Store during the 1930s, featuring (left to right) Will Brown, Earl Brown, and Berely Brown.

Earl eventually decided to close the grocery store when the new Kroger supermarket opened in 1955. However, the iconic Brown’s building continued to serve our community as a home to several other local businesses—including Jack and Kathleen Van Order’s Van’s TV and CB Radio, until it was finally torn down in September 1976.

The early 1940s saw a wave of other foundational businesses move to Radcliff, helping shape our early commercial footprint:
- Craddock Chevrolet (formerly known as Brewer Chevrolet)
- A local favorite bar operated by Nell Davis
- Mabel Lex’s famous "Lex-A-Vila" mansion building, which served as a lively nightclub and gambling establishment at the north edge of the city.
- Stithton Baptist Church, which also made the move to serve the growing spiritual needs of our residents.

From groceries and mechanics to entertainment and worship, these early trailblazers proved that small businesses are truly the heartbeat of Radcliff. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the families who took a chance on a young town and built the economic bedrock we stand on today.

Special thanks to local historian Paul W. Urbahns and his book "Centennial History of Radcliff, Kentucky" for preserving these incredible stories.

Do you remember any of these or other local businesses that helped build Radcliff? Share your story in the comments.

Ready to explore more at Saunders Springs Nature Preserve this summer? Join us for Walkabout Wednesdays.

We are keeping the momentum going all summer long with our popular Walkabout Wednesdays at Saunders Springs Nature Preserve. Naturalist Barbara Baker is ready to lead the way, but here is the best part: there is no set plan or route. Every week, whoever shows up gets to decide what they want to see, and that’s exactly where we will hike. It creates the possibility that each week we will explore something new within Radcliff's natural wonder.

We have two great options to fit your schedule:
- Morning Walkabout
When: Every Wednesday morning at 9 AM

- Evening Walkabout
When: The 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 6 PM

Where to meet: For both the morning and evening hikes, meet us in the large gravel parking lot right across from the Welcome Center.

Whether you're looking for a fresh morning start or a relaxing evening hike through the trees, come out and explore the preserve your way. No registration required, just lace up your walking shoes and come on out!
