Approximately 46.3 million people aged 12+ had a substance use disorder in 2022, underscoring the need for prevention.

9 out of 10 people with addiction began using substances before age 18.

Early use (before age 15) makes individuals nearly 7 times more likely to develop a substance problem.

National Substance Abuse Prevention Month is observed throughout October 2026.
It is an annual observance in the United States during October, aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol misuse and promoting prevention strategies for individuals and communities.
Focus on Community will focus on education and awareness about the risks of substance use, particularly for youth and vulnerable populations. Please follow along in October to learn more about prevention.
