Two bighorn sheep arrived at the Racine Zoo in February. Now there are four.

Helga and Mantis - both born in 2023 at Hemker Park and Zoo in Minnesota - are the newest residents of the zoo's freshly renovated Mountain exhibit. If you noticed the construction over the past year and guessed new animals were coming, you were right. And then some.

Mantis welcomed a baby on May 12. Helga followed with one of her own on May 20. The Mountain is officially a full house.

Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep are the largest sheep native to North America, once numbering around 200,000 in the mid-1800s before hunting, habitat loss, and disease from domesticated animals took their toll. Their population has since stabilized, but every new arrival still matters.

Three new exhibits, free admission, all open through November.

The Racine Art Museum's Custom Museum just opened a trio of shows worth making time for: Stitched Stories: Narrative Quilts and Textiles, Handcrafted: RAM Community Art Show, and RAM Showcase: Cynthia Toops - all on view through November 21.

Admission to RAM's Wustum Museum of Fine Arts is always free, which means there's never a barrier between you and a room full of art that might change how you see the world.

That kind of access matters - and it's exactly what we're proud to support.

A paycheck, hands-on training, and a healthier Racine when you're done. That's a pretty good summer job.

EquiFlow Racine is accepting applications for its 2026 Workforce Program - a paid opportunity for Racine residents to help replace lead service lines across the city. No experience needed. They'll train you. You just need to be 18 or older, willing to work outdoors, and have reliable transportation.

Lead in drinking water is a serious health issue, especially for children and families. This program puts Racine residents to work solving it - building skills and building a safer community at the same time.

Healing takes many forms. Sometimes it sounds like a poem read aloud in a room full of people who understand.

During Sexual Assault Awareness Month, BeLEAF Survivors, Inc. hosted an open mic poetry night at Divino Gelato Cafe, inviting the Racine community to share poetry about healing, strength, and survival. The evening also honored an outstanding volunteer advocate, Catherine Kantowski, and two community partners - United Way of Racine County and Becky Hoesly - for their dedication to supporting survivors.

BeLEAF does essential, courageous work in Racine County - giving voice to experiences that too often go unspoken and building a community where survivors are believed, supported, and never alone.

Racine County has been celebrating Juneteenth for more than 50 years - one of the longest-running observances in the state.

Today we honor June 19, 1865, when word of emancipation finally reached enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas - more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It is a day about freedom, resilience, and the truth that liberty delayed is liberty denied.

This community's decades-long commitment to honoring Juneteenth says something important about who we are and who we strive to be. Racine shows up for this day - not just to remember, but to recommit.

We are proud to serve a community that celebrates its history in full, and to support the organizations across Racine County that work toward equity, opportunity, and dignity every day of the year.

Dream of relaxing in a field, beer in one hand, adorable alpaca in the other? You're in luck!

The Eco-Justice Center is hosting 'Pacas & Pints on Thursday, July 9 from 5 - 8 PM - an evening of craft beer, live music by Rare Privilege, BBQ from Big City BBQ, and a guided tour where you'll meet Theo and his alpaca buddies up close. Bring a blanket or chair, settle in by the pasture, and enjoy one of the most relaxing summer evenings Racine County has to offer.

Tickets start at $25 (early bird pricing through June 25), and every ticket supports the Eco-Justice Center's animals and programs - including field trips, camps, and internships. Grab your tickets before early bird pricing ends on 6/25!

Middle school can feel like a big leap. These 17 kids are ready for it.

Earlier this month, the Racine Family YMCA celebrated the graduation of 17 fifth graders from its Young Achievers Program - a program that helps young people build confidence, find their voices, and step into leadership before they ever set foot in a middle school hallway.

By the time these students walk through those doors this fall, they won't just be ready. They'll be leading.

We're proud to support the Young Achievers Program alongside the Andis Foundation and United Way of Racine County - because investing in a kid's confidence at ten is how you shape who they become at twenty.

Congratulations to all 17 graduates. Racine County is watching, and we like what we see.

Four days on the Root River with a paddle in your hands and nothing on the schedule but getting better at using it.

River Bend Nature Center is offering Youth Paddle Camp for ages 10 - 15 this summer - four-day sessions led by a certified American Canoe Association instructor where kids learn real paddling skills in canoes and kayaks on flat water. For those ready to level up, a Sea Kayaking session takes it further - longer, narrower boats, deeper water, and rescue drills at Quarry Lake Park. Fair warning: you will get wet.

Sessions run throughout the summer starting June 22, and space is limited to strict instructor-to-student ratios - so once it's full, it's full.

Paddle Camp: $90 members / $100 non-members
Sea Kayaking: $100 members / $110 non-members

After dark, the forest has a completely different story to tell.

Tonight at 8 PM, River Bend Nature Center is hosting a free Night Sounds Nature Walk - a guided evening hike through forest, prairie, and river banks where the soundtrack belongs to frogs, owls, insects, and whatever else decides to make itself known.

It's family-friendly, no registration required, and the kind of experience that reminds you how much is happening in the natural world while the rest of us are inside for the night.

Meet at the Main Lodge at 8 PM. Just show up and listen.
