North Lafourche Levee District Protecting people, property, and our way of life in northern part of Lafourche Parish, Louisiana.

The NLLD improves drainage and enhances flood protection in the northern part of Lafourche Parish, LA. The North Lafourche Conservation, Levee and Drainage District, or simply the North Lafourche Levee District was formed by an Act of the Louisiana Legislation in 1992. This State Board has been responsible for improving flood protection on the west side of Bayou Lafourche from the Intracoastal Waterway in Larose to the Northern edge of the Parish. In 2006, through a statewide re-organization of Levee Boards, the North Lafourche Levee District was given additional jurisdiction over the east side of Bayou Lafourche, again from the Intracoastal Waterway in Larose to the Northern end of Lafourche Parish. This area of the Parish was previously under the jurisdiction of the Lafourche Basin Levee District. The North Lafourche Levee District is now all of Lafourche Parish north of the Intracoastal Canal.

We are tracking the path of Tropical Storm Bertha and monitoring possible threats to our region. NLLD, along with our engineers, are making final preparations in all areas of the district, checking canals, levees and pumps. We ask residents to clean debris so there is no obstruction to drainage. We will also continue monitoring the water levels during the storm. Please call our office or send us a Facebook message for any questions and concerns.

The NLLD, in partnership with Lafourche Parish Government, recently completed the excavation to opening the area around the Jessie Dufrene Pump Station in Gheens, LA. This will allow more efficient water flow and operation of the pump station during rain events.

Earlier this week, in response to projected Tropical Storm Arthur, the NLLD with the parish, our engineers and contractors worked diligently to assure that all drainage channels would function as designed and that no drainage within our charge would be hindered in any way. After last night’s extraordinary rain totals and rain rates throughout the district, NLLD has been assessing the whole of the north Lafourche region since first daylight. All structures and major drainage canals are operational and flowing as should be. All levees are intact and without damage and all drainage areas are open and flowing. We were saddened to confirm our early morning suspicion that some internal drainage systems would in fact be simply overwhelmed by the rate of rainfall and the amount of rainfall causing some homes to take on water. We ask everyone to please be patient with water levels, as this was an extreme rain event. We understand your concerns, and we are working diligently with Lafourche Parish to constantly monitor water levels as they recede. Please contact us if you have any questions.
