Public Service Announcement – March 9, 2026

At approximately 9:51 a.m. today, the Quitman Police Department was dispatched to 1017 N. Jefferson Street in reference to an unresponsive Black female found inside a vehicle.

Upon arrival and observation of the scene, the female was pronounced deceased. The scene remains active as investigators continue to gather information.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently on scene and has assumed control of the investigation, with assistance from the Quitman Police Department, to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The suspect is still at large and is considered armed and dangerous. The public is urged to remain alert and to contact law enforcement immediately if any suspicious activity is observed or if you have information related to this case.

The investigation is ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The Quitman Police Department extends a huge thank you to the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office, Quitman Fire Department, and Brooks County Magistrate for their assistance and support during this unfortunate incident.

On behalf of Chief Lawrence McGee and the men and women of the Quitman Police Department, we are heartbroken as we honor the life of Officer Caleb Abney, whose life was tragically cut short in an accident last night in Lowndes County, Georgia.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Styrde, his department, and everyone who is grieving this devastating loss. Officer Abney’s service, dedication, and commitment to protecting his community will always be remembered and deeply respected.
