Summer in the canyon is beautiful, but it can also be dangerous. We strongly recommend planning your hikes for the early morning or late evening when temperatures are much safer.
By midday, the canyons can reach 115°F, with ground temperatures soaring to 140°F. Those extreme conditions can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke.

-Carry plenty of water (more than you think you’ll need) at least 1 gallon or more per person!
-Wear light-colored clothing, a hat, and sunscreen.
-Know your limits and turn around if you’re feeling overheated.
-Let someone know your plans before heading out.

Heat-related illnesses are real, and they can happen faster than you expect.

You can always text or call 911 in these situations.

Help us keep your adventure safe by hiking smart and respecting the Texas summer.
We care about you. 🐦‍⬛

BISON. BUFFALO. FLUFFY COW. THE BEAST.

We all use the names interchangeably.

BUT…

🦬 The shaggy giants roaming North America are actually bison, while true buffalo are native to Africa and Asia. We still call them “buffalo” in many places out of tradition, but if you’re looking at one on the American plains, you’re almost certainly seeing a bison!

We have around 300 decedents of the Goodnight herd here at Caprock. Special and WILD! Keep a good 50 yards away.
