Today marks Day Two of National Trench Safety Stand Down Week, a nationwide effort to raise awareness and reinforce safe trenching and excavation practices.

UCANE proudly supports this important initiative and encourages all of our contractor members to participate. Taking time to hold a stand down, review safety procedures, and discuss potential hazards helps ensure that every worker returns home safely at the end of the day. Safety is everyone's responsibility, and together we can continue to build a stronger culture of safety throughout our industry.

June is National Safety Month — a reminder that safety must remain a top priority on every jobsite, every day.

At UCANE, we encourage all of our members to use this month as an opportunity to reinforce their commitment to workplace safety through ongoing training, hazard awareness, and open communication with their crews. Whether it's conducting toolbox talks, reviewing safety procedures, investing in training, or recognizing employees for safe work practices, every effort helps create a stronger safety culture.

The underground utility construction industry faces unique challenges, and ensuring that every worker returns home safely at the end of the day is a responsibility we all share.

Throughout National Safety Month, we encourage our members to take an extra moment to focus on safety, refresh training programs, and continue building workplaces where safety is everyone's responsibility.

Stay safe. Stay vigilant. Safety starts with all of us.

UCANE Executive Director Joseph Nolan was honored to join UCANE members from Construction Corporation, . Gioioso & Sons, Inc. and E.J. Prescott in celebrating the retirement of longtime MWRA Executive Director Fred Laskey.

During the evening, Joe was proud to announce the creation of the Annual Fred Laskey Scholarship, which will support students pursuing careers in water infrastructure, engineering, and the construction trades.

It was a wonderful night recognizing a dedicated public servant whose vision, leadership, and commitment to protecting public health and investing in critical water infrastructure has left a lasting impact on our communities. Fred's legacy will be felt for generations to come, and UCANE is proud to help honor that legacy through this scholarship.

UCANE was proud to be in Washington, D.C. this month advocating for the water, sewer, and underground utility construction industry during a full schedule of meetings and events on Capitol Hill.

From legislative briefings and coalition meetings to conversations with members of Congress and key policymakers, we made sure the voice of New England’s utility contractors was heard on the issues that matter most: infrastructure investment, water and wastewater funding, workforce development, permitting, and road safety.

Thank you to our partners, legislators, and industry allies who took the time to meet with us and support these important discussions. Advocacy matters, and UCANE remains committed to ensuring our members have a strong voice and a seat at the table.

Water is easy to take for granted—until it isn’t.

During Drinking Water Week, we’re reminding everyone that what’s out of sight should never be out of mind.

Every day, clean and reliable drinking water protects public health, supports economic development, and makes modern life possible. From the water that flows from our taps to the infrastructure beneath our streets, this essential system works quietly in the background, until investment falls short.

Aging infrastructure, increasing demand, and emerging challenges mean we can’t afford to be complacent. Sustained investment is critical to ensure safe, resilient water systems for our communities today and for generations to come.

At UCANE, we are committed to raising awareness about the importance of water infrastructure and the people who build and maintain it.

Join us this week in recognizing the value of something we all depend on.
