The EMS professionals of IAEP Local 876 Medix Ambulance Services in Lewis County, WA are raising the alarm over management’s investment of its time and resources into union busting instead of patient care.

For nearly a year, the Employer has committed to treating us as adversaries rather than the professionals who provide prehospital care to this county. Our Union members have been terminated, punished, lectured, and faced changes to policies and changes outside of the status quo simply because the Employer refuses to accept our Union status.

The amount of time, energy and financial resources being redirected from patient care into fighting a union is appalling.

Our attached letter and timeline to the Lewis County Board of Commissioners details a clear pattern of disrespect, disregard, and dishonesty on behalf of the Employer over the past ten months.

Your providers ask for your attention and assistance in improving working conditions and holding the Employer accountable – the lives of the people of Lewis County quite literally depend on it.

The IAEP was on the scene for the passage of a public safety bill to improve recruitment and retention in the state of Connecticut.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont invited IAEP National Director Phil Petit and IAEP Representatives Chris Kennedy, Scott Schaub and Mark DeBiase to witness the signing of Public Act 26-12 into law.

The law will increase benefits offered to police officers, firefighters, correction officers, National Guard, and EMS personnel in the state. This includes tuition reimbursement, mortgage assistance, healthcare coverage and tax benefits meant to bolster staffing and support for these first responders.

“This new bill will be integral to giving our EMS professionals in Connecticut the financial and professional support they need to do their jobs successfully,” said Director Petit. “We are grateful to Governor Lamont and the Connecticut legislature for recognizing their hard work and taking real steps to keep them provided for in their jobs so they can keep providing for their patients.”

According to a release from the Governor, the highlights of this bill include:

College Tuition Waivers: Waives tuition at all CSCU schools and CT State schools for state and local police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel.

Mortgage Assistance: Requires the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority to develop and administer a mortgage assistance program to assist state and local police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel purchase homes in the communities they were hired to protect. The types of assistance offered could include down payment support or any other appropriate housing subsidies.

Municipal Tax Abatement for Surviving Domestic Partners of First Responders: Expands an optional municipal property tax abatement for the spouses of first responders who died in the line of duty to also cover domestic partners.

Public Safety Personnel Recruitment and Retention Task Force: Establishes a task force to study recruitment and retention issues for public safety personnel.

Congratulations to Connecticut EMS providers for the passage of this incredible legislation!

The IAEP received a Certificate of Recognition from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) this week in honor of the Union’s work to secure federal funding for the World Trade Center Health Program and the Victim Compensation Fund through the 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act and the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

Alanna Badgley, the IAEP’s EMS External Affairs Coordinator, attended Senator Gillibrand’s Morning With Labor event last month to receive this recognition. The event celebrated the procurement of full federal funding for the World Trade Center Health Program.

“The Senator was honored to have the opportunity to recognize the International Association of EMTs and Paramedics and National Association of Government Employees, among other unions, not only for the sacrifices made by our first responders in the wake of the September 11th attacks, but also for your collective advocacy, dedication, and partnership with the Senator and our office over the years,” wrote Jacinta Chen, a Senior Advisor from Senator Gillibrand’s office.

The certificate acknowledged and celebrated the IAEP’s members and leaders for their bravery, resilience, and service.

“You’re going to see something horrible, and the expectation is, ‘Yeah, that’s what we do — you just got to deal with it,’” said Alanna Badgley, the EMS external affairs coordinator for the International Association of EMTs and Paramedics (IAEP).

Badgley discussed the mental strains that first responders often face on shift, the treatments (or lack thereof) available to them and their impacted colleagues, and what work we can all do to rescue the people who rescue us when they need it in an interview with Stateline earlier this month.

Happy National EMS Week 2026 from the IAEP! Now and always, we appreciate all of our EMS professionals for all of the amazing, selfless, and invaluable work they do each day for their communities. 💙

This year, EMS Week is focused on the theme of improving outcomes, together. We here at the IAEP know that the only way to do this is to continue to ensure that EMS professionals get the support and protections they deserve at work— from making sure they have access to fair pay, benefits, and healthcare of their own, to championing better equipment, safe work environments and legislation that moves the field forward.

This week is all about YOU, and we can’t wait to spotlight some of you first responder real ones each day 💪🚑
