Today, we pause to honor Juneteenth — the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States finally learned they were free.

It is a day that belongs to American history in its fullest and most honest form. A day that reminds us freedom is not always immediate, not always certain — and that the work of truly living up to our founding ideals has never been simple or swift.

Here in Warren County NY, we know something about the cost of that work. When the Civil War ended, 644 men from Queensbury had served in the Union Army — fighting, sacrificing, and in 95 cases, giving their lives. Their service was part of the long arc that made June 19th possible.

The Warren County Historical Society is committed to preserving all of the stories that shape this community — including the ones that are hard, the ones still being written, and the ones that deserve to be told more fully. Today is one of those days.

We honor those who waited. We honor those who fought. And we recommit to the belief that history, told honestly, is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Wishing our community a meaningful and reflective Juneteenth.

What did your history teacher leave out?
Quite a bit, as it turns out.

This is a free, public program and everyone is welcome. Scan the QR code on our event flyer to register, or just show up — walk-ins are always welcome.

We're pleased to co-present an evening with author David Gibson, who will discuss his new biography, A Force for Nature: Paul Schaefer's Adirondack Coalitions, published by Syracuse University Press.
Paul Schaefer devoted his life to keeping the Adirondacks forever wild. Gibson's biography — the first written about Schaefer — traces that legacy through Schaefer's own words, family stories, and the coalitions he built over decades of advocacy.

Today we mark Flag Day — June 14, the anniversary of the Continental Congress adopting the Stars and Stripes in 1777.

That same year, Warren County patriots were doing their part. Local militia and settlers felled thousands of trees along the military road from Skenesborough to Fort Edward, slowing British General Burgoyne's march south and helping set the stage for the American victory at Saratoga — the turning point of the Revolution.

Warren County was named for General Joseph Warren, a hero of the patriot cause who gave his life at Bunker Hill two years before that flag was ever raised. Our community's identity is woven into the story of American independence.

Happy Flag Day from the Warren County Historical Society.

If you grew up in Warren County, chances are your memory of this region is made up of more than just the big landmarks. It's the places that are gone now. The ones you almost forgot. That's exactly the territory our Rewind column has been exploring since 2006.
Published on the 1st and 15th of each month, Rewind features history writing from our team, our historian, and contributors who know this region well. Our latest entry, written by summer intern Jackson Stanclift, takes on Magic Forest — and it's a genuinely fun piece of local history that deserves to be read. https://www.wcnyhs.org/rewind/
