Today was the first "Burn Day" of 2026 for QFD. Members traveled to West Chester Fire Department Training Center to utilize their smaller burn building for a morning of Class A live burns. During this training, burn technicians use pallets and straw to build fires in the concrete structure for the sole purpose of teaching members fire behavior and fire attack.

Throughout the morning, we completed over 24 burns, switching crews from fire attack to search and rescue. Most of the 22 members that attended have less than 2 years in the company, so it was some excellent training for them, and for the experienced guys to pass on their skills and knowledge.

Thanks to everyone who turned out and put in the work, even in the heat. Everyone did an outstanding job, including the burn techs, some of which were from Bart Township Fire Company

Thanks also to the QFD Special Division for lunch, and to Robert Fulton Fire Company for standing by for us while we were out training. QFD still had members available in Quarryville for the apparatus that did not attend.

This adds another 150 manhours to this years training and skills that will serve each volunteer well.

At 6:20 pm Friday evening, Engine 572, Traffic 57 and 57 Fire Police responded along with EMS to the intersection of Street Road and Route 472 in Colerain Township for a vehicle accident. Units arrived with a two-vehicle accident with a pile down and several injuries. The vehicles were secured, hazards handled, patients taken care of and traffic controlled.

The company was in service 1 hour. Photos by Tom Amico.

Back in the day.....

There has always been some debate and discussion on whether the QFD had any horse drawn apparatus. This picture indicates that there was, and for a long time, was the only document that we know of that showed it.

In the minute book that was donated to us last year, we found that on page 74 from a meeting in September 1908, there was this entry (3rd paragraph). It says:

"Mr. Fred Reynolds has kindly offered the use of his horse on an occasion that the engine had to be taken a distance."

This was documented in the official company minute book 118 years ago and (for the most part) proves that the QFD engine was hand drawn by men, and if needed outside of town, could be hooked to a horse.

There are lots of other revealing items about the early history of the QFD and Quarryville in general and we will post about them throughout the year.

And, for extra credit, does anyone know exactly where this picture was taken?

This Tuesday evenings training, in preparation for 2026 Burn Day #1 on Saturday, 27 QFD members went over a basic handline review on Engine 574. At QFD, we use the front bumper lines and also lines off of the rear of the engine. All the lines from the rear that are packed in a "minute-man" load, with a 300' 1.5", 200' 1.5", 300' 2" and 200' 2.5".

Volunteers pulled and repacked the lines over a dozen times and then flowed water and went over attack patterns etc. This training makes sure that everyone is on the same page for not only Saturdays training, but on the fireground.

Thanks to everyone who attended. We leave for West Chester at 7 am Saturday.

Schools our for summer!!

Today was the last day of school for Solanco students. So, Engine 574 and retired Truck 57 made the rounds to the High School, Smith Middle School, Quarryville Elementary School and the bus stops to make some of the QFD members' kids happy.

One thing that a lot of people don't think about is how much a firefighters family sacrifices so that our community remains safe. These kids (and all kids of any first responder) give up time with their parent(s) when the siren blows, when there is training, meetings, work details etc. At QFD, we try to give back to our families whenever we can, and today was one of those days.

During the course of the last several months (months due to rain delays etc.), several QFD members attended some agricultural rescue classes at Strasburg Fire Company #1 . These classes were taught by some of the best from RescueTechs, LLC. Monday evening the crews spent night doing top side removal of patients from a silo. Last week they worked on interior removal from the chute of the silo.

These skills prepare us for the "low frequency / high risk" incidents that QFD responds to. This type of training is very important to make sure our members are skilled at all types of rescue scenarios that we might encounter, such as farm, machine, vehicle, environmental, industrial, residential etc. Since becoming a rescue company in 1959 with our Ford Harwick Rescue, QFD has responded to hundreds of entrapments and rescues saving countless lives. This is why we train.

For many years, summer was parade season all over Pennsylvania. Companies would host county and state conventions, town fireman's parades and anniversary celebrations with parades. In the past decade, a lot of these parades have faded away and are not hosted anymore due to various reasons. QFD used to spend weeks and months cleaning equipment, hose and apparatus for these parades. Some may say that it was unnecessary and that some units were "parade pieces", but in Quarryville, we used this time to make sure our apparatus was not just in optimal "job readiness" (like they always are), but that we cleaned and inspected every area of every rig and piece of equipment. This is why we are able to have units that are 20+years old and older that perform like some new units.

Today, QFD attended a classic fireman's parade hosted by Columbia Borough Fire Department Station 80 through the town of Columbia. This is the first parade that we have attended in over 10 years.

Members spent dozens of hours over the last month getting Tanker 57 (26 years old) , Engine 572 (32 years old) and Brush 57 (34 years old) ready for the parade. Rigs were cleaned top to bottom, waxed, every portion of them inspected and detailed. All equipment was also cleaned, repaired, repainted and made ready for the upcoming summer season.

It was a beautiful day for a parade and for fire companies to come together to fellowship and network with each other. At the conclusion, Tanker 57 won the Best Appearing Tanker award. Congratulations to all award winners!

Great work by all QFD members that helped out in any way. Also, thanks to Station 80 on re-starting this (hopefully) annual tradition.

Today, QFD members attended the annual Lancaster County Firemen's Association convention meeting at their East Oregon Road facility. At the annual memorial service, FF Larry Lucarino was honored and remembered as a Life Member of the LCFA. Larry past away last fall after a battle with cancer.

We were honored to be able to attend this service with Larry's family and to help honor all of the LCFA members who passed during the previous year.

Larry's son Frank was also awarded the LCFA Scholarship to help him in his future college endeavors. Frank graduated with the Solanco High School Class of 2026 Friday evening. Congratulations Frank !!!
