For Public Review and Comment (October 1-31):
As part of the ongoing Environmental Restoration Program at MCBQ, the Navy has issued a Proposed Remedial Action Plan for munitions and explosives of concern at Site UXO 019 on the Mainside. The almost 12-acre site includes a contractor staging area and is crossed by three recreational trails. The Preferred Remedial Alternative, defined as Alternative 2, consists of limited surface munitions removal at and along the recreational trails and implementation of land use controls. In 2021, the Navy
investigated and removed potentially explosive materials from the surface along and within a 10-foot buffer of the trails as identified for Alternative 2; one munitions item was recovered and was determined to be safe upon detailed inspection. The Navy’s Proposed Remedial Action Plan would implement the rest of Alternative 2, which includes warning signs, munitions awareness training, updating the Mainside trail map to include information about what to do if munitions are encountered, and implementing other steps to protect people from hazards associated with the site. More information -- including the plan, a presentation about the plan, and how to comment -- can be found here:

Public comment is being accepted through Sept. 26 for a draft hazardous waste management permit for the Russell Road Landfill, which operated on Marine
Corps Base Quantico and accepted both non-hazardous and hazardous waste from
1971-1983. A post-closure care permit for hazardous waste management (incorporating maintenance, gas monitoring, and groundwater
monitoring activities) for the closed landfill is up for renewal. The draft permit and other information is available at:
