Police Union Sets the Record Straight — Backs Kastama for Public Safety and Truth

The Puyallup Police Association has released a powerful statement correcting the record in the District 1 City Council race.

The Police Union—representing the men and women who protect our city—confirmed their full endorsement of Mayor Jim Kastama, citing his unwavering commitment to public safety and to keeping Puyallup’s municipal jail operating to ensure real accountability for crime.

In their letter, the Association calls out false statements made by Jeff Bennett about both the endorsement process and the City’s new public safety facility. They also strongly refute Bennett’s recent insinuations that the Police Department violated state law, calling the claim “absolutely false.”

The letter concludes with a clear message:
“Councilmember Kastama is a fervent supporter of our mission of reducing crime and the fear of crime.”

This endorsement isn’t just symbolic — it’s a vote of confidence from those who serve on the front lines of public safety every day.

You may have seen a confusing mailer from a group calling itself "Puyallup Voters for Integrity." Don’t be fooled. It’s packed with misleading numbers meant to scare you. The truth is simple: Puyallup keeps your city taxes low — just 10.4% of your property tax goes to the City of Puyallup, down from 11.9% five years ago — while funding our police, courts, parks, library, roads, Senior Center, youth programs, the administration of the city, and events like Concerts in the Park. That’s real integrity. State law limits tax increases to just 1% per year. Puyallup Voters for Integrity is a shill for Seattle-style tax and spend politics. Don't buy it.

Thank you to the people of Puyallup for the progress we have made in recent years. Here's why I ran in the first place.

Response to Misleading Attacks

A recent post by “Puyallup Voters for Integrity” makes a number of false claims about city finances and projects. The author, Chris Chisholm, is not an independent watchdog but a political operative (registered as a "Political Committee" with PDC) with a long record of misleading statements before the City Council. His goal is to help elect Seattle-style candidates who would undo the progress Puyallup has made on public safety, fiscal discipline, and community renewal.

The facts are straightforward. The City Council used existing, legally authorized banked capacity to maintain services without raising the overall city tax burden beyond state limits. It was a unanimous 7-0 decision by the Council, faced with an undersized and crumbling police station built in 1968. The City will lease existing space in a building where Central Pierce Fire and Rescue is also located. This will save residents tens of millions compared with past proposals and keeps officers close to the community. The downtown station and jail will be remodeled and serve as the precinct for the valley.

I understand people are tired of political games, like saying you're a "survey" when you're a political ad. I’ll continue to provide open, fact-based communication so residents can see exactly where every dollar goes. Our city deserves honest leadership—not anonymous attacks or half-truths designed to divide us.

— Jim Kastama, Mayor of Puyallup

Ballots arrive today in many households. Let's keep our focus on Puyallup. Campaign season can get noisy, but I'm staying focused on what matters: keeping our city safe, strong, and a place we're all proud to call home.
